In Hindu religion, Lakshmi is the Goddess of wealth, so she is prayed to often. Shiva is the God who controls death. Vishnu reigns over your life. Brahma is the God of creation. You might be thinking of Goddess Kali who is the feared one. My favorite Goddess during student year was Saraswati who gives us smarts.
I thought Lakshmi was the Light bearer.
