New Law To Require 'Black Boxes' In All Cars

New Law Mandates Black Boxes In All Cars By 2015

By Bailey Johnson

A recently passed bill will require all cars to come equipped with "black boxes" that record vehicle data. These Event Data Recorders (EDR), similar to their airplane counterparts, will record data such as speed, brake force and electrical systems monitoring. The days of a car crash being one driver's word against another look to be history.

Senate Bill 1813 (known as Map-21) mandates that automakers install EDRs in all new vehicles starting in 2015.

And who will subsidize those millions who don’t have income? Another tax on producers.

I’m guessing that attaching a 240Volt “charger” to the box would fix this problem.

>>Eventually they’ll be required in all cars, old and new, and non-transmitting cars will be subjected to being pulled over by the police.<<

ALL cars are subject to random stop and search. The 4th Amendment died for autos a LOOONG time agi.

Absolutely right ... the cops will be equipped with an interface to their laptops that will connect to the OBD2 port on your car ,, gather evidence on the spot and charge you with multiple crimes... that 0.5 mph “almost” stop at an intersection , that 23mph in a 20 mph school zone .. etc. etc.

Once they have the mandate to have them installed. Then they can start mandating that they record more and more. GPS- For instance. So they can record everywhere you go.

Of course you are right. What I meant was, non-transmitting cars will be specifically targeted by police.

“Toilet monitors” reminds me of a great gag someone played at a place I worked years ago.

A couple of guys made up a very official looking memo, detailing the company’s new policy about restrooms rules and regulations. It was hysterical. I don’t remember many details, except that towards the end was information about how if the new automatic timers clocked you being in a stall for too long a camera would trigger, taking a picture of the person in violation.

The funniest thing was that nearly everyone believed it. I was fooled for the first couple of sentences, then I realized that what followed was against the law, then the further you read the more outrageous it got.

Those guys did a beautiful job on that thing. I couldn’t convince my co-workers that it was a gag, and one of them went storming in to the manager to complain about pictures being taken while she’s on the john. His response to the memo was priceless.

The MSM can’t get even the smallest details correct. It’s not “all cars”, it’s starting in 2015 for new cars.

I read an article somewhere about them. They’re the airbag computers, and they record your speed, and I don’t know what else. Testimony has been given in court on some accidents as to the speed that the car was going when the airbag deployed. I think they’ve been around since the 1990’s.

The government has been making people buy things they don’t want for a long time. Seat belts come to mind.

1984 just got closer - hey liberals where is your vaunted rigt to privacy? No doubt they will exempt Government vehicles.

I would love to see a cottage industry consisting of refurbishing cars to eliminate electronics and replace with traditional mechanical olcontrol systems to make them maintainable by ordinary folks.

In fact I wonder how much of the electrical system could be eliminated - manual start, manual transmission, no radio, no AC.

Manual (crank) start could lead to broken arms (though you could rely on push starts). Hard to solve the drive-at-night problem though.

Yet another Big Brother intrusion into our every waking moment with Gummint weasels crawling up our sphincters. I'll never buiy a car with one of those things. Strictly vintage non-computerized motor vehicles for me. They can kiss my greasey crease, and like it, the pig sucking homos.

That’s when I mount a belt-fed .50 on my hood with 360-degree spherical articulation. Bring it on, tough guys. Best hope you don’t catch me...

If someone really, really doesn’t like it, I’m sure some ace mechanic will find a way to disable the thing. Illegal?...probably, but who gives a $hit?

I bet some type of GPS tracking will be incorporated into this system so Big Brother knows our whereabouts. It’s all about safety you see and the government would never access this data without your consent. (sarcasm) Orwell’s 1984 has arrived.

That would be all new cars then!

Black Boxes?......racist swine.

Especially considering none of the boxes are black. Just another case of government stereotyping. Somebody should sue.
