The Marine Corps said Tuesday that it is taking another step toward allowing women to serve in combat roles.
Gen. James Amos, Marine Corps commandant, said selected groups of female Marines will get combat unit assignments later this year as part of a study on the appropriateness of women on the battlefield.
Amos announced the initiative in a message posted on a service website.
The program calls for assigning women officers, gunnery sergeants and staff sergeants to combat artillery, tank, amphibious, engineer and assault units.
Current law restricts women from serving in direct combat in all but a few assignments, such as motor transport or aircraft crews.
But in practice women have served in combat jobs as special "attachments" during the Iraq war and in Afghanistan. More than 140 U.S. military women have been killed in the wars.
Last year, Congress ordered a review of the policy formally excluding women from combat roles.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta took that a further step in February by directing the services assign women to some combat roles and study the results.

The basic concept of combat is winning. They are making it equal opportunity.
Women in the military (WIMP) is BS and will get marines killed. But they don’t care all in the name of PC.

Well said, xzins. Combat is not PC nor equal opportunity.
PC will be result in a battlefield loss, and that will injure the nation for a generation IF it doesn’t first destroy it.
Military mechanics know that a female can’t even change a tire without hydraulics. That’s not how it’s done in an extreme situation. Even more, they couldn’t manhandle the hydraulics to get the tire changed.
I was in the first OCS class with women. The program was actually called the “women in the military program”. We called it the WIMP program. That name stuck until some bureaucrat figured out the acronym and changed it.
I wish I had the links to back this up, but I’m sure you both are aware of the reports coming in from all sources that indicate one of the biggest concerns of women in forward positions is the huge numbers of them coming off deployment early.
Why? Cause they’re knocked up.
Leaving the men left in their outfit desperately overwhelmed.
Also another step in destroying long, deeply held American traditions and institutions. Corruption can come in many forms.
The order of nature dictates that Men protect their Women, at least that is how I was raised.
We’ve become a silly country. Bad things happen to silly countries.
