1 in 2 new graduates are jobless or underemployed (and the idiots will still vote for Obama)

The college class of 2012 is in for a rude welcome to the world of work.

A weak labor market already has left half of young college graduates either jobless or underemployed in positions that don’t fully use their skills and knowledge.

Young adults with bachelor’s degrees are increasingly scraping by in lower-wage jobs — waiter or waitress, bartender, retail clerk or receptionist, for example — and that’s confounding their hopes a degree would pay off despite higher tuition and mounting student loans.

An analysis of government data conducted for The Associated Press lays bare the highly uneven prospects for holders of bachelor’s degrees.

Opportunities for college graduates vary widely.

While there’s strong demand in science, education and health fields, arts and humanities flounder. Median wages for those with bachelor’s degrees are down from 2000, hit by technological changes that are eliminating midlevel jobs such as bank tellers. Most future job openings are projected to be in lower-skilled positions such as home health aides, who can provide personalized attention as the U.S. population ages.

Taking underemployment into consideration, the job prospects for bachelor’s degree holders fell last year to the lowest level in more than a decade.

“I don’t even know what I’m looking for,’’ says Michael Bledsoe, who described months of fruitless job searches as he served customers at a Seattle coffeehouse. The 23-year-old graduated in 2010 with a creative writing degree.

A creative writing degree? WTF was this idiot thinking? Sadly, it seems to be the rule, rather than the exception from where I sit. I’m the corporate recruiter for a major automotive manufacturer. I get so many resumes from lunkheads with bullshyte degrees in “World Music Theory”, “Eastern Philosophy”, or my favorite - “Liberal Arts”.

Morons. I need Engineers, Technicians, Buyers, Programmers. Tangible, practical, applicable tradesmen (and women). Not these nonsense degrees that don’t amount to anything but making junior feeeeel good about himself.

It’s not “the economy’s” fault. It’s the dipwads that don’t have a clue what’s valuable to an employer.

(and the idiots will still vote for Obama)

Goes to show that being educated doesn't make someone smart or intelligent.

Michael.
With creative writing degree, NBC has an opening if you are good at editing other people’s words.

Whether or not the idiots vote for Obama depends on how good a job the GOP does in choosing their nominee. An eloquent, conservative fighter could get the job done. Odds are we're in trouble.

It would be intriguing to have the data showing how many of these poor unfortunates majored in “Pre-wed” or “Ethnic Studies 1.01” or “Uderwater Basketweaving” or some other esoteric or obscure, or in practicle terms useless major.....oe chose a meaningful major, but spent their days partying and/or demonstrating and barely squeaked by with a questionable degree.

When I went to college I don’t think you could find an institution, even the most crappy ones, with something like a degree in Creative Writing. At my school, journalism and poli-sci were the bottom of the barrel.

well, Michael, WRITE. Write the Great American Novel. LIve in a garret and eat bread crusts. Isn't that what creative artists did in the past? Did you really expect that someone was going to reward your "creativity" without evidence you really have it?

I graduated from university in 2006. Our journalism department were choc full of idiots that our fraternity never recruited from them. I did date some PolSci students as some of them were hot, but brain-dead when it comes to reality.

Isn't ExxonMobil looking for a new CFO?

Who counsels these kids when they make college plans? Does earning a living not even enter into the discussions? What 'job' did the young man THINK his degree would qualify him for? The Snooki/Obama generation. God help us!

"LIBERAL ARTS" is simply a popular term used in place of "COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES" ~ without which you wouldn't have physicians, chemists, biological sciences researchers, and so forth.

BTW, "employers" are short about 20 million jobs, and that's not because they are too picky about who they are hiring.

They are NOT HIRING.
