College students protest debt on "Trillion Dollar Day" 7:15pm EDT

By Edith Honan

NEW YORK (Reuters) - College students held demonstrations in several U.S. cities on Wednesday to mark the day total U.S. student loan debt was expected to reach $1 trillion, with some burning student loan documents and others demanding a right to "debt-free degrees."

The demonstrations for "One Trillion Dollar Day" come as President Barack Obama was visiting colleges to push Congress to extend the low interest rates on college loans to more than 7.4 million students. If lawmakers fail to act, rates on the loans will double on July 1 to 6.8 percent.

Describing his own struggle to pay off college debt, Obama appeared at the University of Iowa at Iowa City on Wednesday to talk to students about his campaign to make education more affordable. He made similar appearances on Tuesday in North Carolina and Colorado.

Several hundred protesters, mostly college students wearing placards noting the size of their debt loads, rallied in New York City's Union Square park on Wednesday.

They set fire to student debt documents and held signs reading "Debt free degrees" and "Education in America: Don't bank on it."

Hadi Nassar, 31, whose eight years of undergraduate and dental school education has left him $186,000 in debt, said he was having to rethink his plan to work at a community health clinic.

"It makes me angry. It makes me not want to do what I set out to do - which was, help people, take care of people," said Nassar, a dental resid

Educational Justice.

The government’s meddling has encouraged the rise in tuition, through making more money available, through the encouragement of socially conscious course material, and through diversity initiatives enticing the marginally qualified into college.

You’d better open your wallet because they haven’t even begun to soak us yet. :)

I can’t wait until these losers come to my door begging for food. I am to the point that anyone doing so is a parasite who has finally killed the host and is moving on, and I won’t help one bit. I’m just bitter now.

Why would they come to you for food?
Baraq handles that.
Takes your tax money + prints 40% more, and gives them food stamps.

Protesting? They ought to be locked up for breach of contract for not paying their bills!

Since I paid for my own education, can Obama just send me a check for the subsidy I would have received?

The student loan deal is another liberal funding program.

Students borrow huge sums at subsidized rates, pay big $$ to colleges for overpriced education.

Schools pay big $$ in salaries to liberal profs and administrators.

Profs and admins contribute $$ to liberal candidates and causes.

And repeat.....

I have a nephew who also has a ton of student debt — I asked him (no answer btw) the size of the gun the loan officer held to his head when he promised to pay back the loan he got.

When I went to school, I had a plan (it changed while I was there but nonetheless I still had a plan when I graduated). I paid back my student loans — what makes the :gimme” generation’s loans somehow sacrosanct?

Protest organizer Katie Zaman, a Wisconsin Ph.D. student in sociology with $111,000 in debt waiting for her when she graduates in three years, suggested the federal government forgive all student loan debt, especially after bailing out big banks that had lost huge sums because of risky investments.

"It's not going to be worth it. I might as well have not come to graduate school. I might as well be working at Starbucks right now," said the 35-year-old single mother, who has two graduate degrees.

35 years old, 3 years from graduating with a sociology degree, and $111k in debt. There is a slow learner.

Gosh, I guess he just didn't see it coming over a period of eight years.

Pathetic isn’t it?

These people are so inept that they swallow the media line about how “education” is the route to economic success.

Yes if you go to Wharton and then Goldman Sachs you do make a lot of money.

But Katie, you’re not gonna be a 1 percenter, LOL.

The guy replacing her exhaust at the local muffler shop is undoubtedly in better financial shape than her.

Sucks to be you, honey.

If she’d really been smart she would have taken the GSL checks and invested them in Krugerrands.
Now she’s got to wait until a position opens up in the Wymens’ Studies program. Here’s your TSS baby.

Yup! Might just be the source of the Brown Shirt Army! Four years of service to pay off what the military receive as benefits now. Kind of like the Peace Corps. Actually there is a Federal Loan forgiveness program but you have to work in Public service and make 120 payments.

Now the interest on student loans is an itemized deduction, and that was more than I got with a 9% loan.
The catch, of course, is that you have to have income (a job). “Debt-free education”!
There ain’t no free lunch, kiddos, unless your last name is
Obama. Or whatever it is. You voted for him, you tell me.

Apparently investing 111,111 in her education was a very risky investment - she’s still stupid.
