Calif. poll finds disconnect on school cuts, taxes

Nearly 80 percent of Californians oppose $5 billion in so-called trigger cuts to state schools this fall, but only a slight majority of voters support the governor's tax plan to stop it, according to a survey of 2,000 voters released Wednesday.

At this point, 54 percent of likely voters said they'd vote for Gov. Jerry Brown's ballot measure to temporarily boost sales tax and income tax on wealthy California residents, the Public Policy Institute of California poll found.

If it doesn't pass, Brown's plan calls for school budget cuts to be triggered. Supporters of the tax hike measure expect to submit enough signatures to qualify for the Nov. 6 ballot sometime next month.

Wednesday's poll signals something of a voter disconnect in the early stages of the campaign, said Mark Baldassare, the institute's president.

Part of that could stem from the fact that most voters, 65 percent, like the idea of a tax on the wealthy to support schools, but 52 percent of those surveyed said they don't like the sales tax increase.

Most Californians approve of raising taxes, as long as it's on someone else.

This just shows how stupid California is. All they have to do is ask for some more free Obama money.

The State of California Tax Policy in four words.

How much ya got?

I live here, I know. Our only saving grace is Prop. 13, and Governor Moonbeam along with every Democrat here hates it.

They could raise taxes on cigarettes to pay for more teacher benefits! Because, well, that's what the whole ‘send money to schools’ thing is about, more teacher benefits, or keeping what they've already embezzled.

Oh, wait, I'm sorry, someone else already beat them to the punch to fund their pet projects. Sorry teacher's union, you get to try to ask California voters who have already turned down raising their sales tax to say yes this time. Oh, look, the pot's sweetened as it raises the taxes on the ‘rich.’ Aww, how cute.

How about you just stop embezzling the people's money? How about you can those stupid union run health plans that cost up to five times as much as private insurance? How about you stop stealing the salaries of those who work for a living so you can buy even more ads to prop up politicians who will enable you to embezzle even more...

I do notice the prison unions are being awfully quiet..

They are greedy, selfish, and rude.

California schools are just one big fat drain with absolutely nothing good to show for the billions wasted on it.

“California schools are just one big fat drain with absolutely nothing good to show for the billions wasted on it.”

Same here in NJ, and like California they’ve chased many Americans out of the state. Both states will be left with illegal aliens, the permanent underclass, and the government workers required to feed, clothe, house, jail, and “educate” them. NJ has a little hope because we have Governor Christie instead of Governor Moonbeam, but I don’t know if it has gone too far already at this point.

One thing we learned a long time ago here in NJ is that the gubmint unions ARE our government.

IOW, "tax somebody else". No surprise there.
