John Edwards trial: Highlights (and lowlights) from the first week [called woman a "sl*t"]

The John Edwards criminal conspiracy trial continues Friday in Greensboro, N.C., with Cheri Young, the wife of former Edwards aide Andrew Young, expected to take the witness stand.

Young, the prosecution's star witness, dominated the first week of testimony, describing in elaborate detail how he was instructed to hide Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer, during the 2008 presidential campaign.

Below are some highlights from four days of Young's testimony:

• On Tuesday, Young told the court that Edwards instructed him to approach Rachel "Bunny" Mellon, the widow of banking heir Paul Mellon, "and ask for a non-campaign expense, something that would benefit him."

Young said he used the money from Mellon to rent Hunter a house for $2,700 a month and bought her a BMW at Edwards' direction.

"This was going to be a long-term problem," Young said. "And Miss Hunter had good taste."

• He detailed how Mellon's donations were funneled to Edwards. Via ABC News: "Mellon made the personal checks out to her interior decorator, who would co-sign checks with Young's wife in the wife's maiden name, he said. Young said his wife would then deposit the checks into their own account. The first two checks from Mellon were $10,000 and $25,000 in the summer of 2007, he said."

Young also testified about Edwards' reaction to the news that Hunter was pregnant. "He said she was a crazy slut and there was a one-in-three chance it was his child," Young said, according to Politico.

The liberals who criticized Rush Limbaugh for calling Sandra Fluke a "sl*t" don't seem to mind that John Edwards used the exact same word to describe a woman.

Mr. Young was the point man for Mr. Edwards’s deception, going as far to falsely claim that he was the child’s father.

“I was not happy with it,” said Mrs. Young, 38, a pediatric nurse. “It was maddening to me. Andrew had no responsibilities at home,” she said. The couple have three children.

Mr. Young was devoted to Mr. Edwards and his family, making their household run smoothly and even assuring their cars were serviced, working dawn-to-dark hours for the freshman senator in Washington.

Eventually, Mrs. Young said, the tensions of life in Washington sent her back to North Carolina.

“I didn’t like the lifestyle,” said Mrs. Young. “After Sept. 11 hit, it scared me. I moved back to Raleigh.”

The forceful testimony at the end of the day was a shift from a week that was often bogged down in tedious breakdowns of e-mails, cellphone calls and the details of the transfer of more than $900,000 from a pair of wealthy Edwards supporters. The money was needed as the Youngs, their three children and Ms. Hunter went on all-expenses-paid trips to luxury homes in Aspen, Colo., and posh hotels in the West, eventually moving into a home in Santa Barbara, Calif., to wait out the 2008 presidential election cycle.

Seems to me like Andrew had something going on the side with Edwards.

John Edwards is such a dick :-(

I doubt he will be convicted of anything... but somehow, somewhere, somewhen... he will be called to account for the shameful way he treated his wife.

Nobody ever gets away with anything.... someday they will regret their actions.. and that guilt is a painful thing to live with until you can forgive yourself.

May God bless Elizabeth Edwards.

Why? She was by all reports, just as hollow and vicious a sad sack as Johnny boy. They deserved each other, she just drew the short straw and checked out first.

Yes, Elizabeth Edwards was no Damsel. She was more like Hillary and Michelle O. She chose John, just as Kerry chose John.

Thank you for that picture. Let it be their albatross. John Edwards is so Presidential, to blue America. He has the right stuff. He’s got what it takes to take what private industry has got.

Very clever title. I just got highlights and lowlights; however, I’m a woman.

They married for advantage, she being the daughter of a wealthy family and he being perceived as a rsing star with a future in politics. People do tend to apply their middle class, middle American values to them, in error, just as they have to Bill and Hillary Clinton. Elizabeth Edwards was by most accounts prone to belittling her husband in public, very determined to make sure she continued to wear the pants in that family. She was far from angelic.

I think they dig him because he has the Bobby Kennedy look and JF’ingK played up on all the subliminal clues to get all the RATs on board.

Elizabeth knew he had the affair and was still willing to lie and foist his sorry ass on all of us.
Meh. She was a sneaky liar, just because she is dead doesn’t make her a saint.

I remember an old friend from Europe, a Hillary Clinton admirer, telling me how much he liked that man from North Carolina with the nice Southern accent. He just couldn’t understand my reaction.

"the shameful way he treated his wife"

It was shameful, yes. But she knew what he was. She had ample opportunity to know. But she was perfectly willing to foist him on the American people. She gets no admiration from me!

I beg to differ.
