ACLU Files Lawsuit To Overturn Pa. Voter ID Law

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The American Civil Liberties Union of Pennsylvania announced that it is filing a lawsuit today in an effort to overturn the state’s new voter ID law.

The lawsuit will name the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Governor Tom Corbett and Secretary of Commonwealth Carol Aichele. The goal will be to stop the law before it goes into effect in November.

“It’s one of the most draconian of such laws passed within the United States,” says NAACP Philadelphia Branch President Jerry Mondesire, whose organization has joined the ACLU lawsuit.

He says time of the essence, because if the law is not overturned, thousands of Pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised.

Why don’t other groups file counter suits against the ACLU suit?

If I were the elected body of Pennsylvania, my response would be to initiate the same background check and paperwork for voting as buying a gun.

After all, the ACLU supports the NICS check for exercising your Constitutional Right to own a firearm, how can they not support it for your Constitutional Right to vote?

When I went to vote on Tuesday they asked to see my photo ID. Instead of showing them my driver’s license I pulled out my carry permit. No one else had done that but they accepted it. From now on whenever I am asked for ID I will use it.

Seems you need to add “applied for disability benefits or services” to your list.

Indeed. These fraudsters haven’t EVER produced someone that couldn’t vote because of lack of ID, much less someone who hasn’t done at least one of the things on your list.

They’ll try to show that decreased voter turnout among democrats is “proof” of disenfranchisement, when indeed it is simply proof of former election fraud.

Ballsy of you. But it is a valid, state issued ID with your photo on it. And further, it is testimony that you are an upstanding citizen with no crimes in your past.

My question for Republican state people is “Why don’t you pass a law that looks like the one the Supreme Court approved??” !!! Then every judge in America could be called to answer if it has already been approved why are you taking another bit out of the apple?

The one group that did have an issue here in Pa. were the Amish voters. They do not carry ID and probably have never performed items on that list. I’m not sure what provisions will be made...but you can bet it’s being worked..

He says time of the essence, because if the law is not overturned, thousands of Pennsylvania voters could be disenfranchised.

This assertion is utter nonsense! The person who said this should be fined and jailed if he cannot support his claim that "voters" will be "disenfranchised" by the requirement that they have voter ID.

Without voter ID anyone can vote again and again, at any age. How can this even be an issue unless put forth by someone with a seriously disordered mind.

HOW can there be a political solution to our problems, when the powers that be seek VOTE FRAUD at every turn? On Nov 6th, how can we be sure that Obama WASN'T re-elected? He will be counting the votes in a foreign country. The secretaries of state, most of them, have gotten elected with Soros money.

For these and other reasons, I no longer believe there is a political solution to our problems. I believe we are looking at a full-scale civil war, whether Obama or Romney is elected in November.

I hadn't heard of a death penalty for attempted voter fraud.

I'd support one. Cheating to gain power in a republic established by, for, and of the people is EVIL.

How about “real” ID to be the President of the USA.

I worked the polls in PA where we were told to ask for I.D. as a dress rehearsal for November

The pending law was well publicized in my county, including the dress rehearsal, nevertheless the workers at my polling place were rather demanding "I need to see a photo ID".

While I fully support the law at its effective date, my calm reply was, "With all due respect, ma'am, you will see it in November when the law takes effect--not today".

That caused a bit of a ruckus for "refusing" to show that which is not yet required!

They can obtain an identifcation card from the DOT without a photograph (which will be valid for the purpose of this law) if they sign an affadavit of religious objection.

A good vestige of the legacy of William Penn's "holy experiment".
