Water Guns Banned, Handguns Allowed at GOP Convention

In the politically-charged and likely protest-filled streets of Tampa, Fla., during the Republican National Convention in August, water guns will be strictly prohibited. Concealed handguns, on the other hand, will be perfectly legal.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott said this week that banning handguns from downtown Tampa during the convention, as the city's Mayor Bob Buckhorn requested, "would surely violate the Second Amendment."

...

Buckhorn said last month that the state law, which prohibits the city from temporarily banning handguns, makes the city "look silly" because officials can prohibit water guns but not real ones, The Associated Press reported.

"There is no reason to have a concealed firearm in downtown Tampa that week," Buckhorn said in Wednesday's statement. "And, to be clear, I am far less concerned with those who have concealed weapons permits than the ones who may somehow acquire a weapon and use it to create mayhem."

Arms merely means a weapon. And yes, Gov’t cannot restrict such. Having a weapon is not against the law. If I choose to use a slingshot, sword or super soaker, so be it.

OK. I defer. I am most certainly *not* a “local.”

There certainly is. People at the convention have the right to defend themselves against the democrat/commie protestors that will be there.

Super soakers are banned because they can be filled with liquid bodily fluids among other things... And have been dueling anarchist protests in the past.

The governor was absolutely right in his decision today... Now if some criminal sh*t bag brings a gun, conventioneers won’t be unarmed sitting ducks.

“So proud to say Gov. Scott had my vote”

He had mine.

He lost it when his hand picked flunky Angela Corey put George Zimmerman in jail on trumped up charges resulting from his defending himself against a feral thug using his 9mm handgun simply to placate racist mobs.

You would be probably be amazed at what I can do with properly distilled snake venom and a set of pretty fake fingernails!
Not to mention a simple Judo lethal defense technique, that works every time, without fail.

That said, no government can pass laws outlawing insanity.

OTOH, a squirt gun is a toy, not a weapon, and a temporary public ban on protesters carrying them in downtown Tampa during the RNC convention is not something that goes against the right to bear arms, nor the right to protest.

But you know that, right?

You’re right. Scott was/is on the wrong side of the Zimmerman situation.

The right to bear arms is not merely to guns, but to knives or any object I choose.

Since the Revolutionary War was fought with "arms" carried into battle by an individual, hauled by horses or aboard a ship that was privately owned, I interpret the "right to keep and bear arms" to include anything you can carry on your person or on any conveyance you own.

Of course, you no longer own your own body - you can't even sell a kidney to somebody who needs one when you don't. However, if you own a B-52 and have the ability to purchase the armament it is capable of carrying, you have the right to do so in my book.

Its already against the law to put urine or any other substance on someone without their permission.

There is no need to temporary ban such items, and if there was a problem with them in first place, there would be ban on them every where. Not just for this convention.

The role of the thought police is ever increasing.

"There is no reason to have a concealed firearm in downtown Tampa that week,"

But, here is a good reason, anyway:

"And, to be clear, I am far less concerned with those who have concealed weapons permits than the ones who may somehow acquire a weapon and use it to create mayhem."

~~~~~~~~~
Paraphrase: "I'm worried about folks creating mayhem with illegal arms -- but there is no reason for you to be able to defend yourself..."
Talk about "speaking out both sides of your mouth"!!!
~~~~~~~~~

As I have offered before, I will gladly supply all the freshly split, splintery, rosin-loaded pine rails needed to ride that idiot out of town! (Tar and feathers should be available locally...)

Nice attempt at a straw man argument.
EPIC FAIL in the real world, consisting of real people.

What you have demonstrated is a total failure to display the ability to comprehend the basic purpose of government, civil justice, and laws, as it pertains to the USA.

That's OK.
You can openly display your contempt for our society, and not be arrested for your opinion.
I can also openly display my contempt for you, and not be arrested for it either...unless I threaten you physically.
What you and your followers always fail to grasp is one simple fact of human nature, life, society, law and government.

That pertinent fact is:
Civilization is a wafer thin veneer controlling human nature.
Courting anarchy is only fun in theory...

'What you have demonstrated is a total failure to display the ability to comprehend the basic purpose of government, civil justice, and laws, as it pertains to the USA.'

I'm not a anarchist. Nor do I want civil unrest. Nor is our arguments based on straw men or fictionalized attempt at life.

Our discussion was if Gov't can ban objects and things based on nothing. We already have laws against such actions that criminals could do. Yet, you are choosing Govt to ban such objects just in case people act. That argument is the same of banning guns. Even though, we both agree and acknowledge that people will disregard any such prohibitions anyway.

Nor have you even attempted to argue that Gov't even has the authority to ban such items.

Anyway, the cages will be at the DNC and GOP conventions will make great television.

LOL!

You and your naive friends who depend on the ACLU, DNC or NAACP versions of legal theory as a thin shield for civil anarchists, will encounter many cold, hard facts in Tampa, Florida.

But do have fun protesting against a group of people gathering together to exercise their free rights!

You read it wrong. Buckhorn is the mayor trying to ban guns. Scott is the governor who said he will allow no such thing.

Outstanding, Governor Scott. The left is simply apoplectic about his standing fast in the face of this pathetically transparent excuse to enact another gun ban by fiat.

Good point, Mayor. You should immediately disarm your security team and make their disarmament public.
