(Reuters) - A Kansas City woman who converted from Christianity to Islam has been awarded $5 million in punitive damages by a jury who found the telecommunications giant AT&T created a "hostile work environment" after her conversion, according to a judge's order issued Friday.
Susann Bashir, a 41-year-old married mother, sued AT&T unit Southwestern Bell for what she said was a pattern of offensive and discriminatory conduct by her supervisors that began when she converted to Islam in 2005, six years after she started working for the company as a network technician.
After Bashir started wearing a religious head scarf known as a hijab, and attending Friday mosque services, her managers and co-workers called her names including "terrorist," and told her she was going to hell, said her attorney Amy Coopman.
A manager repeatedly told her to remove her hijab, insulted her for wearing it, and once physically grabbed Bashir and tried to rip the hijab off her head, according to the suit.
Bashir complained to human resources and then filed a formal complaint alleging discrimination with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission and was subsequently fired in 2010.

Do you FReepers realize that your country is GONE?
We do, next we’re going to work on your country!
I’m not buying this.
AT&T spokesman Marty Richter said the company would appeal.
Let’s talk about Muslim and leftist schizophrenia.
If you talk to leftists who will swear to you, Islam is a “religion of peace” (Thank you George Bush) they will also say that headscarves are not required, they are “cultural, not ordered by the Koran”.
But if you tell a muslim worker to take their “cultural headscarf off, suddenly you are impugning their “religion”.
This woman needs to get her head examined!
Why on Earth would she become a Mooselimb???
This almost sounds phony. I've never seen anyone act like that on the job. Maybe I live a sheltered life.
While something like this could happen anywhere it is less representative of AT&T behavior than just about any Company in the U.S. I call BS.
and a $5M award ???
The sue employers, schools and even drivers licensing bureaus for the right to hide themselves while they are really trying to be noticed for the first time in their lives.
Most just want 15 minutes of fame. This one seems (for the moment) to have cashed in big time.
Apparently it pays well.
Imagine a muslim converting to Christianity and trying to sue the employer. bwahahahahahahahahahahaah!
Smells like she set them up.
The Christians in her place of work hand Freedom of Religion too and the Freedom of Speech to say what they want.
Convert from Islam to Christianity in some Muslim countries, and you risk a penalty of death. Convert from Christianity to Islam in some Western countries, and you may be eligible for 5 million dollars.
“...take their cultural headscarf off ...”
Well ... If I went hard-core Mennonite and started wearing a prayer covering (I’m not)I would be mighty surprised if people started asking me to take it off. I wouldn’t take off a prayer covering.
That said ... I wonder if the head scarf is a smoke screen and she got fired or disciplined for attendance issues if she expected to take Fridays off.
My conclusion is that Islam is not compatible with Western life.
What a gig.
Though pretending to be mozlim would be like rolling in $#1t to pretend I’m a pig.
But for the Mennonite, their prayer caps are an article of faith. They wear it as a sign of devotion to God.
You don’t find them in some forums saying, oh, it’s cultural, it has nothing to do with our faith, and in others saying it is a religious covering. The apologists for Islam do this all the time. I’ve seen that argument a million times - “the hijabs are cultural, not religious”, - but if they get asked to take it off, then suddenly it’s religious.
Wanna know a sure fire way to end up in Hell?
“A Kansas City woman who converted from Christianity to Islam has been”
Here is the fast track!
Today’s Muslims clearly see the benefits of capitalism. As for the broad in question, getting fired from work is the least of her worries.
Look for more of this “career choice.”
