- A lesbian who sought a North Carolina marriage license with her partner and was rejected under a state law banning same-sex marriage was arrested with another person Thursday after they refused to leave a government office where several gay and lesbian couples were turned away.
The civil disobedience followed a day after President Barack Obama publicly endorsed same-sex marriage, and two days after North Carolina voters overwhelmingly passed a constitutional amendment that defines marriage as solely between a man and a woman.
The protest came amid attempts by a gay rights group, Campaign for Southern Equality, to broaden public support to allow same-sex marriage and more protests are planned in coming days at other county offices in North Carolina that issue marriage licenses.
Nine gay and lesbian couples each presented completed forms and identification to a clerk at the local Register of Deeds office in Winston-Salem, but were refused because state law recognizes only heterosexual couples.

Thanks - I found the information.
I agree, east of 95 is MUCH more conservative than the rest of the state. And I also agree, Mitt better realize that he only has grip on the GOP-e. The conservative base is not likely to allow him to drift too far towards center/center-left - before we will be more than happy to let him sink out there on that raft!
I pray that he gets a decent VP nominee, because if he gets a McCain-like dweeb, he will loose to Obama. If Mitt wants to GUARANTEE a win, all he has to do is stay right where he is on MOST issues and get a Tea Party-backed, conservative-arousing VP and he is IN LIKE FLYNN!
Nail ‘em up in a crate and ship them to one of those fag-happy “gay marriage” states, which revels in that kind of deviancy.
Do these people have jobs or are they just professional protesters?
Do these people have jobs or are they just professional protesters?
And the lefty Street Theatre begins.
Another one of those, if I had a son he’s look like Trayvon.......If I had a gay sister she’d look just like this lesbian bride.......unifying moments of the POTUS.
I don't know, but I'm sure it won't be a shock when "Hail to the Chief" is replaced with "It's Raining Men."
Huh? I thought state law recognized marriage only between a man and a woman and doesn't say anything about orientation. The MSM is simply clueless.
34% voted for someone other than Romney.
I am so SICK of this “movement.” Being denied access on the basis of one’s sexual preference is not equivalent to being denied access on the basis of one’s skin color. It’s not even in the same ballpark.
Someone please tell me ... When were LGBTs put in chains, sold, and beaten? When were they lynched or dragged behind pickup trucks until dead? When were they terrorized with burning crosses by @ssholes in white sheets? When were they made to use separate restrooms, water fountains, and lunch counters? When were they sent to separate public schools? When were they forced to ride at the back of the bus? When were they fed slop and paid a pittance for their hard labor? When were they denied a vote or counted as three-fifths of a person for the census? When did they have sh*t thrown at them just for walking to/from home through the “good” part of town? When were they called “boy” and struck in the face for not addressing their “betters” with enough respect? When were their community leaders assassinated? When did all of that happen to them?
Black people should be outraged at the LGBT attempt to equate the bloody Civil Rights movement with a desire for a marriage license and tax benefits!
Before you include Washington State in that appellation, know that it was the governor and legislature who slipped that through -- as in some other states -- and the actual population (especially on the east side of the state) is busy as I speak signing referendum petitions to block the homo marriage law.
Typical leftist headline. Makes it sound like the deviant was arrested for merely applying for the license rather than because she refused to leave.
Oh, for refusing to leave a government office when ordered to do so — trespassing, in other words. Fine. From the headline, it sounded like North Carolina was arresting gay people for trying to get marriage licenses.
This won’t stop. Folks, this is just a couple of queers looking to be the next “Rosa Parks” for their “movement”.
OK Freepers bang me with a bat..but who the heck is interested in this crap? This is nothing but distraction! This election is all about the economy and jobs!
Yes....I agree with y’all on the social issues like gay marriage...but the bone headed voter needs none of these issues to divert their attention from this disterous economy and pilaging of the Consitution with Obama regulations
Let me ask you good folks a question. Why aren't good conservatives getting locked up for civil disobedience following any number of Barack Obama's transgressions against our foundational principles, and our Constitution?
I've said in previous posts, that the Ballot Box is broken, the Soap Box is broken, and the Cartridge Box is the 'go to' box of last and final resort - but that there is still one box remaining that we patriots have yet to open. That is what I call the Tool Box, of which, civil disobedience is one of the more effective tools within.
I've been flamed a few times for even making this suggestion, but it's my feeling that we've only got two real choices at this juncture. Either keep complaining on the Soap Box (which isn't working), or take it to the next level, which is the Tool Box (see: Boston Tea Party).
Of, course, there's a third choice, which is simply succumbing to the encroaching tyranny, but I doubt that most of us are consciously choosing that option.
Over the next four years, I believe it's going to become apparent to most conservatives that these are our realistic choices. I hope we choose wisely.
Of course it’s a distraction but the more it’s put out there at this time, the faster people will be burned out on it and regain their focus on the economy.
