CNN) -- Years after saying Israel should be "wiped off" the map, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Saturday that there is no need to take up arms against his nation's foe, state news reported.
Speaking to citizens in northeastern Iran's Khorassan province, Ahmadinejad accused unnamed governments of stepping up military purchases in anticipation of a possible war pitting Iran versus Israel.
But he suggested that wasn't necessary, according to the report from the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency.

Bleh. Why does Iran have to do any dirty work when Hezbollah, Hamas and now Egypt will do it for them?
If he says yes then it is no, of he means no then it means yes...
Common sense?
Out of the question.
This is pure unadulterated Bull Shiite.
Ahmanutjub REGULARLYspouts off one thing for the world to hear, but tells his followers that Israel must be wiped off the face of the map.
This is the guy who says he regularly talks to the Mahdi, in some well, and that if HE causes enough chaos, the Mahdi will come and The Great War start and the destruction of all infidels, or something to that effect.
It is Islams way to lie to further the cause of Islam.
This is just another one of those lies.
(Come to think of it, its not that common in this part of the world either. Obama and his ilk are living proof)
The sudden creation of a unity government in Israel has him rattled. The last such government was formed just days prior to the 67 war.
The moon will be dark on the 20th ?
I admit you have a point. But in the long run, realism always wins and Israel and Iran are natural geopolitical allies, maybe more natural allies than Israel and the United States are. Nobody but future Osamas and Zarqawis would benefit from endless Iran-Israel enmity.
Could be Imadinnerjacket knows Iran would get it’s butt handed to it.
Taqyiia?
A statement like this can only mean that those clowns in Tehran with the white beards and the back dresses feel the need to diffuse tensions in Israel in anticipation of their nuke program reaching conclusion. My hunch is that the Israeli leadership won't fall for it and will take decisive action at the appropriate time.
Goliath to his handlers: “ keep my coffee hot, I’ll be right back!”
6 million Israeli jews.
With those odds, Allah is a real pu$$y
Interesting analysis. Historically the Shiite Iranians have fought the Sunni Arabs. Most recently the 1980’s war with Iraq during which Iran suffered over 800,000 casualties. Given the fact that no nuclear armed nation has never been invaded much less lost a conventional war, it is understand able why Iran would want to have or be thought to have nuclear arms. It can be argued that the anti Israel rhetoric was intended to allow them to wear the cloak of Islamic warriors fighting Zionism. This would insulate them from Sunni criticism of their nuclear ambitions. However the Israelis cannot afford to buy into this analysis. Netanyahu, the secular leader and defender of the Jewish people has to take the Iranian threats as real and their possession of nuclear weapons absolutely unacceptable. Netanyahu cannot make the same mistake the German Jewish leadership made in the late twenties and early thirties dealing with Hitler. It will take a lot more than speeches in remote Iranian provinces to convince the Israelis that Iran really means them no harm.
Realism? No, the Twelvers arent realists. The same Ahmadinejad who spouts the taqqiyah in the article also prays hasten the return of the Mahdi . . . so watch what happens once they get a nuke or two.
But in the long run, realism always wins and Israel and Iran are natural geopolitical allies
He’ll have more “flexibility” after the elections...
“With the force of God behind it, we shall soon experience a world without the United States and Zionism,” he said.
Not really reassuring unlike the headline.
