The Turkish press is reporting that, with the latest round of arrests of former military officers for allegedly forcing the resignation of Necmettin Erbakan’s Islamist government in 1997, one-in-five Turkish generals is now in prison.

Even those who see the end of military influence in Turkey as the litmus test for democracy should worry. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan now targets political opponents, real or imagined, without restraint.

It was my impression that the military kept Turkey a democratic state. Not anymore. Islam triumphant, Satan laughs.

It maybe a run up to a civil war.

The Egyptian military wanted to be rid of Mubarak & his family. They cynically used the influence of the MB on the Egyptian ‘street’ to force Mubarak out. Now what? We’ve got a bunch of Islamic thugs beating their chests every time things don’t go their way. You have to wonder if there’s a Napoleon lurking amoung the military ranks... one who knows the value of “a whiff of grape.”
