Fifty-six percent of of Americans say President Barack Obama will win re-election, the Gallup polling organization said Tuesday, drily calling that prediction "perhaps a slightly more optimistic assessment than is currently warranted."
Thirty-six percent say presumptive Republican nominee Mitt Romney will be the one taking the oath of office in January.
Party affiliation shapes whether Americans are bullish or bearish on the odds of another term for Obama: 81 percent of Democrats but just 24 percent of Republicans predict he'll pull it off. But 58 percent of Independents agreed, compared to just 31 percent who said Romney would get the keys to the White House.
Gallup's latest daily tracking poll found the incumbent and the challenger in a dead heat, with Obama up a statistically meaningless 46 percent to 45 percent over Romney.
"It may be that Americans recognize the advantages Obama has as the incumbent and that historically, presidents seeking re-election usually win," according to Gallup's analysis.

“Americans can be counted on to vote their pocket book. They always have.”
I agree; whatever Obama thinks he’ll gain with student loans appealing to one groups pocketbooks will fall flat with a much larger group who won’t benefit from it (but will be expected to subsidize it). I’d love to see the mood at any of the commencement speeches Obama is giving this year...
Just because people think he is going to win (steal) the election doesn’t mean they think it is a good thing or that they want him to win.
Like I saw on another thread if Satan himself were running against Obama, most Americans would have to flip a coin to decide who to vote for.
If the election is counted half way fairly, Obambi is going to lose badly.
Tell that to George H.W. Bush, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Lyndon Johnson, Harry Truman, Herbert Hoover, William Taft, Grover Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, Millard Fillmore, John Tyler, Martin Van Buren, John Quincy Adams and John Adams. (That's 16 Presidents who failed to win a term that they ran for as President.)
Compare that to George W. Bush, William Clinton, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, Dwight Eisenhower, Franklin Roosevelt, Calvin Coolidge, Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt, William McKinley, Ulysses Grant, Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, James Monroe, James Madison, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington. (That's 17 Presidents who were re-elected.)
So technically that's a true statement. 51.5% of the time a President who runs for re-election is re-elected. But that statistic is cold comfort for a Whitehouse looking at these polls.
Truman was elected once.
"Once!"
Obama is the incumbent and, obviously, has the most name recognition. Most “adults” are not into the election process...yet. So the easiest answer to give to “Who will win the election” is “Obama” since he’s the best known. This survey is useless.
Yes, my eyes crossed coming across that one too. Curious, that term “optimistic”.
Great post! Thanks!
Is that a win because he is declared president, or is that a win because flesh and blood people vote for him.
Because that is two entirely unrelated subjects.
The fix is in. He will get another term and better find a foreign Country you like for your next move.
Yes.
With romney running against Obama and Nobody willing to WAKE UP except very few of US and support VIRGIL GOODE. Obama has just as much as chance as romney to win and BOTH ARE THE SAME. So it is hard to get behind either one. They make it impossible. So it is what it is which is that both will be bad.
Obama is toast. He is a one term wonder.

To spin it as commonplace for the guy elected to office to be re-elected is mythmaking. It just isn't historically accurate for Democrats.
The press played it up like Mondale and Dukakis and Kerry all had a chance at winning the White House as well.
They will never admit defeat until after the votes are cast. A Democrat writer even acknowledged this in 2004.
They will spin polls, they will unleash October Surprise smear campaigns against the opposition, they will distort and redact quotes.
And Romney isn’t even a favored candidate among conservatives. But he isn’t a lifelong red diaper doper baby steeped in the hate of Marxist ideology against this nation.
