Jonah Goldberg: ‘Violence solves all sorts of problems’
Daily Caller ^ | 5/17/12 | Michelle Fields

Washington - National Review Online editor Jonah Goldberg spoke Wednesday about how “violence solves all sorts of problems” and argued against the critique that Jesus was a pacifist. (Snip) “A lot of people think we get this idea [that violence solves nothing] from Jesus,” Goldberg said. “This is one of the things they love: ‘You hypocritical conservatives, you think violence is a solution — you call yourself a Christian, you’re not.’ Jesus told his followers to carry swords. Unless he had some sort of theory that fell out of in the Apocrypha that these were just great big kabob skewers,

Maybe we can get everyone could settle on one of these:

I have three: two upstairs and one downstairs. Highly recommended accessory. You can hang them discreetly in a closet. Always be prepared.

World War II was a problem, Nazis were a problem, and we beat that problem through violence. Slavery ended through violence. Holocaust ended through violence.”

There are things worth fighting for... and things worth fighting against...

I’m concluding your definition of “violence” is ... wanting.

The Sargent-at-Arms you refer to IS using violence. That’s his job: using, and threatening to use, violence to persuade people to comply. Per the point of this thread, violence DOES solve problems, it can & is authorized in society and law for problem-solving ends, and is legitimate behavior under some conditions. “Law enforcement” works precisely because police et al are equipped and trained in the use of violence, using the threat thereof to convince the non-compliant that the state WILL win any escalation. We don’t say your Sargent-at-Arms needs a “restraining order” because he is _authorized_ to apply such violence under conditions pursuant to eliciting compliance.

Enforcement IS violence. Hence the root word “force” therein.

Law enforcement uses “engagement tactics and actions”.

Anarchists and criminals use “violence tactics and actions”.

Violence is reserved to those breaking the law. Enforcement is reserved to those upholding the law.

Jesus was upholding the law. In fact, he is the law and fulfillment of the law.

JN8:12 - “Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”

Seems our enemies had a problem with being on the other side of the device featuring that verse. Our military actually got directives to remove the references, lest our enemies (being shot at) object to the wording.

No, violence is inflicting harm upon another, irrespective of law. Enforcement is lawful application of violence to bring another into compliance.

Trust me. I’ve studied it. And not just as an abstraction.

And the other time Jesus talked about swords he meant the stabby slashy kind. “Let he who hath no sword sell his cloak and buy one.”

These ACOGs are 6-9yrs old (varies with purchase of firearm), so maybe the newer models don’t have the *verses*. But now that I know mine have them, I’ll never let them go for any reason. They’re officially “Family Heirlooms”, as are all my Class III Weapons in the huge dbl-door Cannon T65 Safe.

True. I’d probably lean toward doing some nice work on the barrel (good, and legal, of course, length for accuracy, crowning, etc.), bolt, trigger, ergonomic furniture, handloads and the like, and see if it could be made more accurate. If the accurizing attempt failed, next Mosin. Repeat process. ;-)

But then I’m an older has-been, who derived pleasure only from tinkering and the like—not so much into zombie movies or end-of-the-world reveries. Army National Guard kinda took all desires for adventure and excitement out of me (still catching up on peace, quiet and sleep in the middle of nowhere).

Universal suffrage will be ended without violence.

When the Washingtonians can't pay their apparatchiks, the collapse of the Republic will be complete.

The Military will step in and fire all incumbents, and reset the Republic and Constitution.

All Amendments repealed save the Bill of Rights.

The military doesn’t have the right to ‘step in’ and fire anyone. It’s not how the system works. We’re the lawful people - liberals are the liars and unlawful.

LOL

Tell that to King George III.

Might makes right, all bets are off when the scumbags in DC default on the SS checks.

Actually, Shelly never explained what happened to my sort-of namesake. Since the poem was supposedly set in Egypt, his successors probably just chiseled his name off the monuments and added their own.

Killing and murder are not the same thing when it comes to soldiering...if that were the case, Christ would have told the soldier to desert his ranks and become a pacifist.

As for the wages, the dictators of the time already knew that in order to keep their armies in line and loyal to them, they had to keep promising them ever larger wages and larger percentages of spoils and slaves captured. Poorly paid soldiers were often tempted (and did,) in certain circumstances to commit war crimes(real murder) to supplement their incomes and often their officers would over look such atrocities(especially if the officers got a share of the loot.) That is what Christ was referring to and I think he had a real bead on what those soldiers may have been up to, or perhaps a bead on something they had been planning!

I agree......my question was rhetorical....meaning, what you stated was implied.

There was also the Centurion that demonstrated a faith not found in all of Israel.

Until Christ returns.....there is no peace.

Just a simple fact that pacifists seem to deliberately ignore, because, well, they are not peaceful.

Wait until Buddhists go bad....you'll see pacifism at it's worst.
