Israel denies planning troops in Cyprus

Israel denied Monday reports in the Turkish press that it planned to deploy thousands of troops in Cyprus to protect oil and gas interests in the sensitive region...

Turkey's Anatolia news agency quoted a Greek Cypriot official saying that Israel planned to send 20,000 troops to the Greek part of the divided island to protect 30,000 Israelis to be employed in nascent joint oil and gas projects.

Turkey on Friday threatened reprisals against companies bidding for oil and gas drilling projects off Cyprus, in the latest spat between Ankara and the island's internationally recognised government...

Turkey's warning came after the Cypriot government said 29 companies had made 15 bids for exploratory drilling in a second round of licensing to exploit offshore oil and gas deposits.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkish troops invaded and occupied its northern third in response to an Athens-engineered coup in Nicosia aimed at union with Greece.

US firm Noble Energy said last year it had discovered gas reserves of up to eight trillion cubic feet (226 billion cubic metres) with an estimated value of 100 billion euros ($127 billion).

This would satisfy the eastern Mediterranean island's domestic gas needs for decades...

Cypriot President Demetris Christofias has said the island's offshore oil and gas search would carry on regardless of the hostile reaction from Ankara, and that any finds will be used for the benefit of all Cypriots...

On Thursday the Turkish military said Turkish fighter jets had seen off an Israeli plane that "violated" the airspace of the TRNC, which is only recognised by Ankara.

Turkey's diplomatically isolated; Russia remains its enemy; Iran turned out to be a faux ally (at best); Syria's Assad is now an enemy; Lebanon is shredding again; the Turks have to choose between Jordan (which is aligning with the Saudis) and Israel (which Erdogan has rejected and alienated); at the NATO conference he was expected to push for involvement in Syria, has renewed Turkey's bid to join the EU (never gonna happen), and held out a hand in friendship to the pseudostate Pakistan. Talk about carrying coals to Newcastle. That would make 50,000 Israeli troops. :')

Out with my son yesterday and he commented that The Greeks and the Isralies were getting chummy...guess this might be what he was saying.

Think about it....Trooops there would be less likely targeted by Iran since there are Turks on the island too,

Not that the Turks would be happy about it.

:’) Cyprus is probably out of reach, and has no military targets Iran would worry about, but if therre were, Iran wouldn’t have any problem bombing Turks.

Israel’s self-defense moves on that Turkey-based (turkey baster?) blockade runner brought the Greeks around. It became more likely back when Erdogan started to go out of his way (during and after Cast Lead) to publicly insult Israel and Israelis. Also, Israel isn’t in NATO, so it can participate as it pleases the next time Turkey attacks Greece.

Russia supports Greece, and has decent relations with Israel, as well as expedient relations with Iran.

Cyprus reached out many years ago to Greece to counter Turk pressure.

They realize the Greeks are too broke to help so they reached out to Israel, that and the sharing of the newly discovered joint oilfield in the E Med.

Cyprus and Israel have signed a number of military cooperation agreements that give Israel exclusive use of the Andreas Papandreou (former Greek Prime Minister) airbase in Paphos, creating the first Israeli military station outside Israel.

Israel would not deploy troops there. Russia would.

Cyprus’s location is very strategic. Whoever controls it, and should they also be equipped, would have de facto control over the eastern mediterranean. That’s why the 1960’s and prior drive to eliminate the Turks on the island, that’s why the liberation of the northern portion of the island, that’s why the British base there, and that’s why the big stretch by the EU both geographically, financially, as well as diplomatically (see london agreement which was unilaterally broken). Yes, even the Russians with their missile sales have thought about it.. Now as the EU falters, a megali Israeli voice suggest the next visitor at the whorehouse. Desperate really, but in view of what’s going on in Egypt, who can blame them?
