(Reuters) - Only days after former President George W. Bush backed his Republican opponent, President Barack Obama warmly welcomed the Texan back to the White House and praised his "extraordinary service" to the country.
Political irony hung over the emotional event that brought Bush and his wife, Laura, back to Washington: the unveiling of their official portraits, which will hang among those of other U.S. presidents in the Grand Foyer of the White House.

"I am also pleased, Mr. President," he said, "that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask, 'What would George do?'"
I wonder if Michelle showed Laura all her closets? That seemed to be the only thing (number of closets) she was interested in when Laura hosted her at sho the WH after the 2008 election.
I think everyone should read Rush's more candid and accurate transcript of the event.
While he graciously welcomed Bush back to the White House, Obama did mention the struggling economy he inherited, thanking his predecessor for helping him transition into office during the economic crisis.
President Bush understood that rescuing our economy was not just a Democratic or Republican issue; it was an American priority. Ill always be grateful for that, Obama said.
I will always remember the gathering you hosted for all the living former presidents before I took office, your kind words of encouragement, he *the grifter* added, before joking, Plus, you also left me a really good TV sports package. I use it.
President Bush seemed to relish being in the spotlight as he cracked jokes about his now-permanent place in the White House.
Thank you so much for inviting our rowdy friends to my hanging, he quipped, repeating a line his father, former President George H.W. Bush, said at his portrait unveiling in 1995.
I am also pleased, Mr. President, that when you are wandering these halls as you wrestle with tough decisions, you will now be able to gaze at this portrait and ask: What would George do?, he said, chuckling.

The what would George do was the BEST!!!
You always gotta appreciate someone with a sense of fun and humor. Those without, like Obama, are dangerous.
She wasn't thrilled to be next to Mrs. Dunham, er, Mrs. Soetoro, I mean, Mrs. Obama.
Dubya cuts a hell of a figure.
And Laura is just beautiful.
I don’t like to inject anything into this, but in 4 years they will be unveiling paintings of obozo and *shudder* moochele.
That will be a stomach-wrenching day.
Usually Obama takes advantage of a situation like this to taunt or insult the invited Republican. He must have realized that would not go over well this time. It made me think of the scene in "Fail-Safe" where Peter Sellers as the German is struggling to keep his arm from going up in a Nazi salute.
Or they can stick to what they've got...
I thought Obama stayed true to form and was nasty
