A California water agency director has been arrested on suspicion of felony child abuse after a neighbour shot and posted an online video of him whipping his stepson with a belt while playing catch.

Imperial Irrigation District Director Anthony Sanchez, 34, was arrested Friday on $100,000 bond according to Sheriff's Lt. Scott Sheppeard after caught hitting the child with a belt in one hand and a baseball glove in the other.

In the video uploaded to YouTube, the stepfather's seen repeatedly beating the boy, even knocking him to the ground, before stepping back to wait for him to toss the ball back which he drops.

After a long stall by the boy who stands frozen in place, the man returns to him - a glove on one hand and a belt in the other - hitting him once again.

The boy can be seen physically upset, holding his body, before Lopez opens his window, calling at him to stop.

There is no excuse for what he was doing to that boy. He should spend some time in jail to think about it too.

“Well, Given that it’s California, accounting for the man’s age, race and title - he’s likely a Democrat political appointee and most certainly deserves jail time for something. So why not this?”

Can’t argue that one. Anything that can be done to remove these leeches from society, with their lifelong, inflation-adjusted, pensions, can only be a good thing.

I am 50 years old. I come from the era when a father used a belt for discipline.

I am also a father.

I watched the video.

The man is an asshole. He should have HIS ass kicked.

He isn’t “teaching” that kid anything except to distrust and despise his “stepfather”.

It makes me ill to hear freepers defending this jerk’s actions.

you are absolutely right. I bet the little boy hates that steaming pile of excrement because that steaming pile of excrement is banging his mom. And justifiably so. She should have stayed unmarried at least until the little boy was grown. Now she’s brought a heathen into their home and wrecked it.

If they arrested the guy, then they have probable cause (unless you’re the Zimmerman prosecutor). Being that they arrested him on felony charges, I suspect they examined the kid and found serious marks on him. Of course I could be wrong - it’s always possible that a feminist saw the tape and considered it ample evidence for ruining a man’s life, but, more likely, there was good cause.
You think Zimmerman's prosecutor is a rarity out there in the land of prosecutors?

I mean it is totally justifiable that the little boy hates the steaming pile of excrement.

“I sense another poor guy is about to get railroaded for behavior that wasn’t really that bad and may have been done for good cause.”

It is completely amazing to me that you write a post like this. I hope the bastard has to do some jail time and pays a hefty fine. I am 72 years old, and I grew up with a father for whom had enough respect that he didn’t need to hit me to get my attention. There really isn’t any good reason to hit a child, but it’s easier than being a real parent just to whack your kid. It shows a complete lack of parenting skills.

Pretty disgusting isn't it? It takes all kinds.

I said up thread, I played all sports, played catch with my kids for nearly 15 years, never once did it with a damn belt in my hand.

We had neighborhood BB gun target practice with my boys and their friends, for years, totally supervised when my kids turned 5 or 6..

Maybe I should have whipped my kids for not hitting the bullseye or coke can every time?

Agree, some of the comments here are just flat out disturbing.

Overall, yes. But, of course, there are a lot like her...starting with Duke and then Wenatchee.

But, in this case, you had the video first and the guy was arrested...he’s probably someone that shouldn’t be near kids - but we’ll find out.

Exactly... There is a huge difference between the two, and btw, kids instinctively know that difference after they reach a certain age. One who uses extreme “corporal punishment” (aka child abuse) may think their child is “broken” and behaving because they have “learned” better, but the rage and wrath inside builds for so many of them. On the other hand, if parents do nothing at all the kids will grow up foolish and headstrong. As always the balance is somewhere in the middle.

The “rod of correction” is not meant to smack a child down, it is meant to be guidance. Many parents - mostly out of fear - take it way too far. They then forget that there is another part of that whole passage in Proverbs - Fathers do not provoke your child to wrath (in our society perhaps it should be commonly said as ‘parents’ due to so many families without fathers).

A willfully disobedient child, and an adult who doesn’t even understand how to make it in this world without taking from others in a variety of ways is what you get when you are a parent UNWORTHY of honor who either never disciplines at all, or abuses a child into submission never truly teaching them anything except fear, intimidation, and bullying. A horrible path to have to go down as an adolescent or an adult which is why so many of these kids will end up in trouble, which then makes it a problem for all the rest of us.

Thank God for neighbors like the person who filmed this and turned it in. Surely there will be those who will say horrible things about that person, but they will perhaps never know how much good they have done for that child.

Just because our parent(s) were abusive and used “corporal punishment” ALL the time on us older, and not so much older people does NOT mean they should be thanked for that. If you went through that and STILL became a decent person then it is YOU who have made that accomplishment DESPITE the abuse you suffered.

Minimizing or justifying any kind of abusive behavior does no-one any good at all - that is what allows the cycle to continue. AND, it is probably why so many people - again out of fear - cannot see any difference between discipline and abuse.

ALL JMO, but I’ve been there as a survivor of child abuse, and now as a proud parent of two “adult” children and two teens. I REALLY understood the difference and wanted to be sure my daughters NEVER felt like I did. We spoke about this the other day in fact, and between all of us we can only remember several (like 3 or 4) times in the last 20 years that I have EVER spanked them (and it was true spankings - not being whipped with a belt, or anything else - being hit with a belt is NOT discipline it is TORTURE and abuse). I haven’t NEEDED to do more than that because there are OTHER ways to teach a child that will actually give them the skills they need to be REASONABLE people, neither spoiled nor abusive to others.

Ah God! maybe a secret vice more widespread than most suspect has had its lid flipped off.

If two adult fags want to play with each other that way, well let them beat the tar out of one another so long as they don’t hurt anybody else and suck up the personal consequences themselves. God would not want it that way, but he gives certain permissions even to the devil.

When a SMALL CHILD is pulled into this sort of VIOLENT PLAY, this is what? Criminal? Dirt ignorant? Cruel? Sick? Vile? Satanic? Wicked? I don’t know if there is a single word that wraps this up.

I sure HOPE the chesty thumpers are KIDDING about this. Stories like this apparently are rare. Idiots like that jerk are also ruining the freedom of normal families to make proper use of, er, chastisement by being the perfect poster pests for such things as state bans.

Bullying is an attitude and need never (or seldom) come to vicious blows. It also has other things to strike with, like shame.

It will suck to be them at God’s throne. “Why did you cause that little one to stumble?!?”

Wasn’t for playing catch.

Backtalk, hitting my sister, stuff like that.

Every day I'm thankful that my dad cared enough about us to discipline us.

If this whipping in California was for merely dropping a baseball, I'd agree it was uncalled for and despicable. But we can't tell from the video what it was really for.

You're a glaring idiot...Ya even put California in the title, when the second word in the article is, "California". How obvious can you get?

But it backfired on ya slick, as 98 percent of the posters think you're some kind of sadistic weirdo.

The neighbor did the right thing, and probably should have just went over and kicked the step dads ass or threatened him with a whip, instead of just challenging the step dad like he did.

Last time I looked a game of catch was suppose to bond a father and son.

Any father who plays a game of catch with his very young son, glove on one hand and a belt in the other, is an ass.

Great post.

All the “I would have ended up in jail unless..”, “the jails are full because..” hoo-haa reek of desperation to justify what would otherwise be unjustifiable.

It doesn’t help that the assertion is demonstrably false. There are several countries in the west (I happen to live in one..) in which any form of discipline that leaves marks on a kid is a criminal offence.

Anyone who takes the time to look beyond the end of their noses will find that incarceration rates and crime rates (per capita incarceration especially) are much lower than the US.

Maybe the boy didn’t want to play ball? Maybe he wanted to go dress up in his sister’s clothing, which deserves a severe whipping.

I see you are well-practiced at straw-man rationalizations.
