Greeks are pulling cash out of banks, stocking up on food in panic ahead of make-or-break election Sunday

ATHENS — Greeks pulled their cash out of the banks and stocked up with food ahead of a cliffhanger election on Sunday that many fear will result in the country being forced out of the euro.

Bankers said up to 800 million euros (US$1 billion) were leaving major banks daily and retailers said some of the money was being used to buy pasta and canned goods, as fears of returning to the drachma were fanned by rumours that a radical leftist leader may win the election.

The last published opinion polls showed the conservative New Democracy party, which backs the 130 billion euro ($160 billion) bailout that is keeping Greece afloat, running neck and neck with the leftist SYRIZA party, which wants to cancel the rescue deal.

Note to self - Do not go anywhere near a bank or store the first week of November.

I’m canning maybe half a dozen half pint jars of peach preserves this afternoon. Put 6 quarts of peaches in the freezer yesterday. Not much to speak of but they were free so I’m happy and my foodstuffs isn’t complaining. Every little bit helps especially since I had to pull up all the garden squashes yesterday.

I know how to burn small chunks of C4 to cook with, but I don't know how to cook it. ;)

I'm just a cook.

—The GDP of Greece was around $310 Billion. So $1 Billion/day out of an economy that small is significant.—

Hence my post. My belief is that the government is going to have no choice but to take draconian measures. It will mean that FINALLY they will have “kicked the can” down the road for the last time.

"Investing in canned food you’ll in is at worst an investment that pays the rate of food inflation, if you eat it in a year and didn’t pay the higher cost of buying it new at that time. "

Properly stored, you could eat it in 30 years too.

Sure this isn’t about the Obozo campaign?
Pray for America

Take notes. We'll be in the same situation very soon if the 0bama regime hangs on to power!

Maybe you didn’t read the article. Some is cash withdrawl, maybe to stockpile food and goods for a temporary shortage.

The article said...

“This includes cash withdrawals, wire transfers and investments into money market funds, German Bunds, U.S. Treasuries and EIB bonds,” said one banker, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

So people going into Bunds, dollars, US treasuries, EIBs, that is safety from the Drachma or Euro.

Meanwhile, people who have some Euros on hand are going to be in better shape than people who have none on hand if Greece returns to the Drachma. The Euro isn’t going to collapse overnight just because Greece leaves. It will still have stability and solid value in the meantime. Even if it goes to par with the dollar, that is going to be a lot better than the Drachma once they start printing to pay off their debt.

Sounds like it is...

there's two different movies...."The Pianist" IRRC was about a Polish Jew pianist caught up in the Warsaw Rebellion...the other movie "The Piano" was set in some island somewhere....and I agree...it was not very good...

"The Pianist" however, was superb...

it started slowly the onslaught against the Jews...

The Vorlons are the last of the great Ancient races who last defeated this evil some 1000 years before.

You forgot to mention that the Vorlons are a bunch of big government nanny-staters. :)

Good thing that if it happens here, we won’t have to worry about the Katrina factor...

We got our ducks in a row already...Preps are made and in place, ready to go...

I won’t even lock our door on the way out of town...Nothing will be much use for anyone in that house for the long run...

Hah! Good point.
