So what is Russia’s end game? Protect Syria from Israel, or get rid of Assad for their own purposes? Help me here, I can’t get my arms around this one...
In part it could be because Syria, along with Lebanon and Iran are among the last few well-heeled purchasers of Russian arms, aircraft, etc.
And that is big business that brings foreign currency to Russia and helps keep their arms industries running.
They also comprise one of the last foreign areas where Russia has an international presence and influence.

They are threatening NATO and the UN and europe. Russia wants Assad to prevail. NATO wants Assad to step down. Russia does this little display of force to make it clear they will not allow any intervention in syria by NATO, the UN, or any EU forces.
Because Russia doesn’t have many naval bases and one is in Syria.
I don’t think anyone really knows what’s going on.
Perhaps Russia is trying to make a move while they still have a sucker to deal with-—Obama.
They'd like to keep their port in Tartus
My two cents is protect their base and keep everyone else out of getting involved in Syria..
