How the hell does someone "inadvertently" forget about 2 large dogs like that? Didn't they notice the dogs kennel was empty? Crap like this really pisses me off. Every summer idiots leave their dogs in their sweltering vehicles. What a horrible, torturous death for those poor dogs. That cop needs a baseball bat up side his head.

The guy responsible for the dogs probably had been drinking or got into the evidence room or both...

No, He needs to be Arrested and Charged with 2nd Degree Murder of a Peace Officer, just like ANYONE ELSE WOULD BE if they KILLED A POLICE DOG regardless of the circumstances.

A couple badges need to be surrendered, along with their pensions.

So sad and so senseless. How stupid do you have to be to allow this to happen?

Those responsible need a Felony conviction and loss of gun “rights”.

According to the statement, Benoy is “completely devastated by the tragic accident.”

Devastated my butt. When something like this happens it shows the dogs owner actually doesn’t much care for the dog. Otherwise they wouldn’t “forget” about them.

Hopefully, his wife won’t allow him to transport their children anywhere in the summer.

Yup. Haven’t we been told all along that a police dog is an “officer” and the consequences for harming one are the same as harming a patrolman or trooper?

What consequence would result from an officer locking a partner in a cruiser in summer heat until he died? Manslaughter at least.

But, they’re cops. Killing dogs is in their DNA, apparently.

Gosh, sounds like involuntary manslaughter of a police officer to me. So...will the morons who left their PARTNERS in the car be fired, arrested and charged with their killings??

Time to prove that the cops are not above the law.

As a police officer who works at a department with a K-9 officer I agree on all those assessments.
The officer(s) responsible need to be given the harshest punishments.....experience the harshest consequences. I truly hope that happens......but unfortunately I doubt it will.
I find it incredulous that a department could afford 2 K-9's yet couldn't afford the automatic thermometer system that should should be installed in all K-9 cruisers. Our K-9 cruiser has it, it constantly monitors the temperature and if it gets too hot it sends an alarm to the police officer, if the officer doesn't respond it pops the door.
Nonetheless, what a tragic unnecessary pair of deaths that are truly nothing short of murder, due to criminal negligence.

On top of the obvious ethical problems, trained dogs cost the department $6000 apiece.

If the dogs had barked, one of the deputies might have at least shot them. /s

Seems like he considered the dogs as nothing more than a piece of equipment,,,like his badge or nightstick. And at the end, those poor dogs were probably calling out to their “friend” for help.

You have expressed your opinion. Allow me to express mine.

It's a dog. NOT a human. Therefore it is NOT murder. It is perhaps animal negligence, maybe even animal cruelty. But it is NOT murder.

Haven’t we been told all along that a police dog is an “officer” and the consequences for harming one are the same as harming a patrolman or trooper?

Hmm, never heard that put in quite the same language. I understand your particular feelings for the animals, and I appreciate the bond that forms between the officer and his dog. But that doesn't change the fact that this is a dog, not a human.
The definition of murder:
Unlawful
killing
of a human
by another human
with malice aforethought.

I think it is dangerous to use terms that inflame or incite those in an attempt to manipulate the act and the punishment that may be meted out.

It is a shame when two valuable resources of law enforcement are lost. I am saddened when a expensive police helicopter is lost or damaged in a crash. But murder? IMHO, this is not a murder. It is a loss of a valuable resource, and should be addressed and punished appropriately.

So you've never heard of the laws that charge a criminal with battery/murder should they shoot or stab or otherwise kill a k-9 police dog?
I guess you need to start making some phone calls to your legislators to get those laws repealed.

It's a dog. NOT a human. Therefore it is NOT murder.

You're opinion would probably impress most "pro-choice" people and make them happy to hear you utilize one of their memes.

The last time I checked a "police helicopter" doesn't learn, think, feel pain, breath, eat, drink.....etc. So you're equation of one "tool" to the other is most definitley your "opinion". But then again, those are the traits that pro-choice people like to say babies in the womb don't have either.
