SAN ANTONIO -- The Bexar County Sheriff's Department says two of its K-9s have died after they were left inside a patrol vehicle overnight.

According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, the dogs were "inadvertently" left inside the vehicle overnight and died from apparent heat exposure.

Based on your "opinion" as well as your tag line, I'd say you may want to go ahead and start working on getting all animal cruelty laws repealed so you and Michael Vick and open up a nice little dogfighting ring and make some good money with your "tools and resources".

This is very sad. Those dogs rely on their owners for food and protection and were
sitting there dying, panting, and waiting for their master to come and save
them from the heat.

Dogs and pets are at our mercy which deserves special attention for their safety.
Will the officer be brought up on murder charges for killing two fellow police officers?

“... he considered the dogs as nothing more than a piece of equipment”.

Makes me think what type of person would do this. The dogs were trained to protect him... give their life for him if necessary. Their death was nothing short of agony. IMHO, the cop should lose his job. If he was this irresponsible... why does he deserve a badge? The cop was given the opportunity to be a K9 officer and cost the taxpayers a lot of money (added to pain and suffering the dogs went through). Just my two cents...

So you've never heard of the laws that charge a criminal with battery/murder should they shoot or stab or otherwise kill a k-9 police dog?
I guess you need to start making some phone calls to your legislators to get those laws repealed.

Nope. Never have. And I do NOT support them. Battery maybe. But sorry, NOT murder. JMHO though.

You're opinion would probably impress most "pro-choice" people and make them happy to hear you utilize one of their memes.

Wow! Attack! It's OK, I expected it. Nope, not "pro-choice" at all. In fact, I am very much "pro-life". For PEOPLE!!! I don't anthropomorphise animals, or trains, or helicopters. OK, maybe a little bit with some machines, but never animals. Read my tagline.

The last time I checked a "police helicopter" doesn't learn, think, feel pain, breath, eat, drink.....etc. So you're equation of one "tool" to the other is most definitley your "opinion". But then again, those are the traits that pro-choice people like to say babies in the womb don't have either.

Hmm; Touche. But it (a helicopter) is a valuable resource, and incredibly fascinating to me. And infinitely more harder to replace from a financial standpoint. But a dog is a living being, I understand that. I just don't share your incredible defense of an animal. That's OK! We just have different opinions on what is important to us.

BTW, I have very specific ideas about people and especially babies in the womb, etc. I would defend their rights the same way I would (and do) defend any helpless HUMAN.

I know many people have strong feelings about dogs. (and cats, horses, chickens etc.) I do not wish or cause any undo harm or abuse to animals. I just don't share your feelings. That's OK too!

I'm gonna have to agree/disagree with both of you here. Dogs aren't humans. They shouldn't rise to the same level of crime when committed against a canine versus a human.

That being said, the issue arises where you have a double standard between police and the citizenry. If you happen to kill a K9, you will most likely be charged with murder, manslaughter, etc. of a police officer. They charge you the same as if you killed an actual cop. Therefore, the officer responsible for two tortuous deaths here should be held to the same standard, and charged with, at the least, negligent manslaughter of an officer. Just because an officer committed it doesn't mean the dogs should be considered mere tools when they're given a much higher status for the same situation for the rest of us.

Aside from the dogs cruel deaths that is 20-30 thousand dollars flushed down the toilet by some idiot cop. It costs that much to buy and properly train these breeds

It’s a dog. NOT a human. Therefore it is NOT murder. It is perhaps animal negligence, maybe even animal cruelty.

PERHAPS negligence? Wow.

I find it incredulous that a department could afford 2 K-9’s yet couldn’t afford the automatic thermometer system that should should be installed in all K-9 cruisers. Our K-9 cruiser has it, it constantly monitors the temperature and if it gets too hot it sends an alarm to the police officer, if the officer doesn’t respond it pops the door.
Nonetheless, what a tragic unnecessary pair of deaths that are truly nothing short of murder, due to criminal negligence.

Thanks. I didn’t know K-9 cruisers could have those installed. And you are right. If a dept. can afford a K-9 unit, they should certainly been able to afford a thermometer. It would have saved these two dogs lives. It should be a requirement that all departments with K-9 units have those type of thermometers installed. Happy to hear your department has them.

Here is what those poor dogs went through.

“A matter of minutes, five or 10 minutes” is all it takes on a hot day for a dog to wind up organ-damaged or dead, Messonnier says.

“Here’s how it progresses: First, the dog pants hard, trying the only way it can to cool off. As the temperature rises and the dog realizes it’s in trouble, it becomes frantic, tries to get out, scratching at windows or digging at the seat or floor. It’s an awful moment, the dog’s moment of realization. “If you want to compare it to humans,” says Messonnier, “it would be this: The person is too hot, stifling, feeling trapped. But a person knows things can be done,” like smashing a window or blowing the horn for help. Dogs, of course, panic, since they can devise no strategies other than digging desperately. They often bloody themselves in this effort to survive. Some have heart attacks.”

“The panic doesn’t last long. Very quickly the dog goes prostrate, begins vomiting, having diarrhea and lapsing into unconsciousness. Organs are disintegrating. “All organs function properly within a certain temperature range, and when body temperature reaches a certain level, organ cells begin dying. There’s inflammation, white blood cells rush in … a cascade of things happens in minutes,” he says. Liver, brain, kidneys are dying.”

“When you do an autopsy on a dog that died this way, the organs are soupy.”

http://www.usatoday.com/life/columnist/pettalk/2009-07-14-dogs-in-hot-cars_N.htm

Even if caught “in time,” the dog may have permanent kidney and liver damage. Hard to think of a more horrible way to die.

Unlike fetuses, dogs never become human. So the argument that dogs aren’t human and therefore shouldn’t be allotted the same level of legal protection stands to reason. Otherwise we risk abusing the rights of humans where crimes against animals occur.

Well put. If anything, a trained dog handler should probably be held to an even higher standard than your average thug who kills a K9.

Unlike the Bexar County deputy, around here the police have ways of covering it up so the negligence is not so obvious. An officer here has done this not once, but twice. The first time the incident was unreported but the second time he brought the unconscious dog by my clinic at noon and I was at lunch so he ran it over to another in town where the vet hadn't left for lunch. The dog died from the heat exhaustion but the official cause of death pronounced by the vet was heart failure. The vet is a political and social friend of many of the officers. Yes, after a dog is cooked thoroughly in a hot car the heart does fail...ya' think? The police officer has since ran for chief and other offices and is now a police chief in an adjacent township.

How would punishing a Michael Vick for what he did be an abuse of human rights?

As always the severity of the crime plays a role. The severity must be weighed against the worth of the one accused. If Vick as a human being was worth the same a any dog he may have executed, he would have surely been executed himself. As much as I despise Vick as a human being, that would have been a miscarriage of justice.
