SAN ANTONIO -- The Bexar County Sheriff's Department says two of its K-9s have died after they were left inside a patrol vehicle overnight.
According to a statement from the Sheriff's Office, the dogs were "inadvertently" left inside the vehicle overnight and died from apparent heat exposure.

Makes me think what type of person would do this. The dogs were trained to protect him... give their life for him if necessary. Their death was nothing short of agony. IMHO, the cop should lose his job. If he was this irresponsible... why does he deserve a badge? The cop was given the opportunity to be a K9 officer and cost the taxpayers a lot of money (added to pain and suffering the dogs went through). Just my two cents...

Wow! Attack! It's OK, I expected it. Nope, not "pro-choice" at all. In fact, I am very much "pro-life". For PEOPLE!!! I don't anthropomorphise animals, or trains, or helicopters. OK, maybe a little bit with some machines, but never animals. Read my tagline.
The last time I checked a "police helicopter" doesn't learn, think, feel pain, breath, eat, drink.....etc. So you're equation of one "tool" to the other is most definitley your "opinion". But then again, those are the traits that pro-choice people like to say babies in the womb don't have either.
Hmm; Touche. But it (a helicopter) is a valuable resource, and incredibly fascinating to me. And infinitely more harder to replace from a financial standpoint. But a dog is a living being, I understand that. I just don't share your incredible defense of an animal. That's OK! We just have different opinions on what is important to us.
BTW, I have very specific ideas about people and especially babies in the womb, etc. I would defend their rights the same way I would (and do) defend any helpless HUMAN.
I know many people have strong feelings about dogs. (and cats, horses, chickens etc.) I do not wish or cause any undo harm or abuse to animals. I just don't share your feelings. That's OK too!
Aside from the dogs cruel deaths that is 20-30 thousand dollars flushed down the toilet by some idiot cop. It costs that much to buy and properly train these breeds
It’s a dog. NOT a human. Therefore it is NOT murder. It is perhaps animal negligence, maybe even animal cruelty.

I find it incredulous that a department could afford 2 K-9’s yet couldn’t afford the automatic thermometer system that should should be installed in all K-9 cruisers. Our K-9 cruiser has it, it constantly monitors the temperature and if it gets too hot it sends an alarm to the police officer, if the officer doesn’t respond it pops the door.
Nonetheless, what a tragic unnecessary pair of deaths that are truly nothing short of murder, due to criminal negligence.
Thanks. I didn’t know K-9 cruisers could have those installed. And you are right. If a dept. can afford a K-9 unit, they should certainly been able to afford a thermometer. It would have saved these two dogs lives. It should be a requirement that all departments with K-9 units have those type of thermometers installed. Happy to hear your department has them.

As the temperature rises and the dog realizes it’s in trouble, it becomes frantic, tries to get out, scratching at windows or digging at the seat or floor. It’s an awful moment, the dog’s moment of realization. “If you want to compare it to humans,” says Messonnier, “it would be this: The person is too hot, stifling, feeling trapped. But a person knows things can be done,” like smashing a window or blowing the horn for help. Dogs, of course, panic, since they can devise no strategies other than digging desperately. They often bloody themselves in this effort to survive. Some have heart attacks.”
“The panic doesn’t last long. Very quickly the dog goes prostrate, begins vomiting, having diarrhea and lapsing into unconsciousness. Organs are disintegrating. “All organs function properly within a certain temperature range, and when body temperature reaches a certain level, organ cells begin dying. There’s inflammation, white blood cells rush in … a cascade of things happens in minutes,” he says. Liver, brain, kidneys are dying.”

Even if caught “in time,” the dog may have permanent kidney and liver damage. Hard to think of a more horrible way to die.
Unlike fetuses, dogs never become human. So the argument that dogs aren’t human and therefore shouldn’t be allotted the same level of legal protection stands to reason. Otherwise we risk abusing the rights of humans where crimes against animals occur.
That is how I see it also.
Well put. If anything, a trained dog handler should probably be held to an even higher standard than your average thug who kills a K9.

Well, I hope those dogs are safe in Heaven, now. Yes, I’m one of those that believes God takes animals into Heaven.
As always the severity of the crime plays a role. The severity must be weighed against the worth of the one accused. If Vick as a human being was worth the same a any dog he may have executed, he would have surely been executed himself. As much as I despise Vick as a human being, that would have been a miscarriage of justice.
