Psychiatrist Called Threat Team About Aurora Shooting Suspect James Holmes

James Holmes came to the attention of the threat assessment committee at the University of Colorado but no further action was taken because he left the school more than a month before the attack that killed 12 and injured 58, sources told ABC News.

ABC News has learned that Dr. Lynne Fenton, the psychiatrist who was treating Holmes, 24, at the school, was also a key member of the university's threat assessment team. The group of experts were responsible for protecting the school from potentially violent students.

KMGH-TV, ABC News' affiliate in Denver, reported exclusively that, according to sources, by early June, Fenton had informed other members of the team about her concerns regarding Holmes.

But on June 10 -- three days after Holmes bought an assault weapon and added it to his already growing arsenal -- he suddenly told the university that he was dropping out of the neurosciences doctoral program with no explanation.

KMGH-TV reported last week that he'd purchased the weapon hours after failing a key oral exam.

I say “they messed him up” is if he was over medicated. The brain snapped as a result.

We are dealing with the vanguard of a generation which has been medicated, coddled, told 'good job!' at every turn (regardless of results), who have collected awards for showing up, and who have been staunchly protected from the outrageous ravages of dings in their self-esteem.

Think about that for a second.

They (and no, not all, but enough) are complete strangers to result oriented reality and the possibility of failure. They are not emotionally equipped to cope with having to do something over or get it right the first time.

And their 'can' has been kicked down the road by every person up the line who should have genuinely helped. The 'nanny state' is a failure as a parent.

Jared Lee Loughner’s problems were known well in advance too, but no one followed up on the reports.

Isn’t or wasn’t Marcy, NY home to a notorious NY state Psychiatric hospital?

This is a University that deals with the brain. If they knew that he was a threat why didn’t they warn the authorities? They should be held responsible for the deaths because they knew.

They knew he was going to open up in a movie theater with multiple weapons and slaughter a dozen people and wound dozens more... Seriously ?

Their assessment team do just that... assess.

Obviously he was doing things that put a flag on him, but nobody can predict the level of violence he was going to commit...they probably thought he was more of a threat to himself than the general public..

I'm not defending the guy, but you are still innocent until proven guilty....if having the signs of mental illness was a reason to hold someone or detain them, all the liberals in Congress should be under observation, some in straight jackets...

~Shooter fails oral exam
~Same day he buys firearm
~June 10- drops out of program
~Early June - Fenton notifies threat assessment committee.

Notice the timing.
Fenton did not notify in January, March, May or when he failed the oral exam.
She notified WHEN he was dropping out. Up to that time he was no threat.
Once he left or was leaving, he was considered a threat. Why? Because he didn’t fill out reason for leaving? Because they could no longer have control over him?

Maybe they were bickering about the failed exam.

Something stinks in that program.

Oh, the threat assessment committee only cares about the safety of their students and not about the general public. So Fenton was concerned that he would do something to another student. Since he was leaving, the threat was no longer there. Makes sense.

The other 5 students should be examined - just in case.

This was going beyond mental illness. This was outright demonic possesion bigtime we were dealing here in regards to James Holmes.

I disagree. I recommend that you, and everyone read “My Brother’s Madness” by Paul Pines - an eloquent and heartbreaking book about his surviving a deeply disturbed family. His brother, who was younger, was driven mad. Biology had nothing to do with it.

I found that out - that divorce was a business years ago. The lawyers provoke conflict to inflate their fees, the real estate people move in for the kill.

I heard a rumor that Holmes father was somehow connected with the Pentagon and was recently involved in some high security issue, and that his son is actually a drugged stooge brainwashed to silence him.

Begs to question this, where is Holmes father and who is he?

There was nothing authorities could have done, even if concerned people from the university warned them.

My neighbor down the street is strange, very strange. But he’s not a criminal until he commits a crime, and in this country we don’t lock people up because they worry their neighbors or acquaintances.

The only one responsible for this crime is the one who did the act.

I can't believe these threads on FR. Just WHAT were the "authorities" supposed to do with someone who has not committed a crime? What kind of police/nanny state are you advocating? If someone reports someone else as acting funny, or God forbid, owning a gun, should the government follow them around everywhere or just jail them because maybe they might commit a crime someday? And responsibility? How about responsibility on the shooter. Sue, sue, sue is heard all of the time on this forum which is supposed to be promoting tort reform. Unbelievable.

"...divorce is also good for business. An unintended consequence of the bra burners??? Probably not. "

I know someone who's about to get nailed, and yes, you are right on. It's good for business even before the fact... good for the facilitators thereof, and oh so much fun too...
