Milwaukee gun range voluntarily reports law-abiding customers to local police

Wisconsin -(Ammoland.com)-Wisconsin Carry has learned of some concerning information that we would like to pass along to our membership and right-to-carry interested folks in southeast Wisconsin.

In a recently published Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article which you can read here

It was reported that the former Badger Guns (now Brew City Shooters Supply) http://www.brewcityshooterssupply.com/ has, since 2009, been reporting the names of every customer that comes in to use their firing range to the West Milwaukee Police Department.

In this time over 25,000 customer names were reported to West Milwaukee Police Chief Dennis Nasci who ran a background check on each through “his system”.

So far in 2012 it was reported more than 8,800 customer name records have been supplied to West Milwaukee Police by Brew City Shooters Supply to have a criminal background check run on them.

We do not know yet, how else West Milwaukee Police have been using these records they have been given by Brew City Shooters Supply, nor if they are storing those customer names for future reference. We also do not know what other purposes West Milwaukee Police might choose to use these customer name lists for in the future.

I know the range well, used to work at YPG. Met my wife in Yuma, bought her her first gun, a pistol, and she went to the range every morning before it got hot. Loved working there, every day was an adventure. Especially Miners Camp, where we stopped on our way back to town. The bartender, Shirley, knew more jokes than I can remember. Good memories.

I smell a VERY expensive lawsuit brewing here... Against the City of Milwaukee, the Police Department, AND the business owner.
;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;;

And it should be filed against each of them, and the suit against the city and PD should be combined and make the police pension fund as culpable, and not the taxpayers.

Any gun range owner who uses his customers as bait without disclosing it needs sued big time too.

I have not taken the time to read all of the comments on this thread. However, what the cops are doing is illegal. And I would bet that if someone were to seek counsel, they’d have a pretty good law suit against the ranges.

Can’t run a criminal history on someone without cause(ie...needed as part of an investigation) or consent of the person. I doubt any of that happened here.

Cops are so damned dumb. And they wonder why people distrust them so much.

I wish I had some advice for you. I know in Denver when they collected names and plate #s of protesters they eventually had to hand over any and all information collected on the individuals to the people themselves and destroy all records. Unfortunately, IIRC they sued the PD in order to get that done. That’s the only thing I can think of at this point - there is no doubt that your rights were violated. If you know other people who were also customers, then I’d try to get together with them?
Perhaps call a public meeting for everyone who has ever been there, etc??? Definitely call the media if you do put together a meeting. I wonder if there are any lawyers among the group of people whose names were turned in? If I think of other ideas, I’ll definitely write back.

That is why I shoot at a range that only requires a state hunting license of any type and you can go there, out in the country, in the rual area, and shoot away for free! Only sometimes does a ranger come along and ask to see a license. Otherwise, bang away.

“It is a federal crime to use the NCIC background check system in the manner described.”

But the agency that would do the prosecuting is run by eric holder.

End of story.

I’ve never been to a shooting range where they ask for any kind of personal information.

I take that back. You do have to sign a release form at some ranges, so I guess they do have some basic info. I don’t remember anyone ever asking for a driver’s license number or anything like that though. The outdoor range that I usually go to doesn’t require you to sign a release form or anything else.

It’s likely that firearms stores in nearly every locale are doing the same for their local police customers and others. Local government customers receive federal funding and spend big bucks. Local vendors are probably also afraid of neglecting to be the eyes and ears of their political/regulator class.

Most voters with higher incomes and time for politics get their incomes directly or indirectly from government. We’re witnessing one of the many strange associations in a debt regime.

BTW, during the ‘90s, I personally saw bulletins (from a federal agency) warning that running background checks on residents who exhibited no suspicious behavior was a serious crime. Dispatchers sneered and scoffed at it.
