Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

Tomasky is predicting an Obama landslide, and Nancy Pelosi is predicting (yet again) that the Dems will retake the House...

After 2008, we were told by the MSM that: A) the GOP and conservatism was dead as the dodo
B) we might as well cancel the 2012 election, because Obama was going to win by a mega landslide..

Well, s**t ALWAYS happens..to the Dems...it's called 2009, 2010, and in a few months, 2012.

The Dems have lost the Senate..period...that's why Reid is going apes**t..he will not be back as minority leader..

I supported W through two elections. His diligence in protecting this country from terrorism is unparalled. W, however is and was not a conservative. He never claimed to be. The closest he ever got to it domestically was his ‘compassionate conservatism’ campaign theme.

His collaboration with Teddy on education, his attempt to set foot on the amnesty path, and his prescription medication expansion of Medicare/Medicaid attest to his misguided dream that one could actually work with liberals to accomplish something substantive. His fault in this arena was that he believed liberals are actually honorable.

Lastly, W’s most egregious act was to creat the Department of Homeland Security and the TSA who will, if unchecked, actually destroy us from within.

Yes... W was no Conservative - a pretender as most to get elected - ah the life of a politician.

After reading some of these posts, it is surprising to me also on the Romney bashing also too. Do they want a second Obama term?

Not wanting another Obama Term - but no longer wanting to play along with the corrupt political system. There are times that you have to take a stance against corruption!

Not talking about voting for Obama - more taking a stance against the corrupt party and process - ie. either not voting or voting third party.

Conservatives had their chance to nominate a conservative candidate and blew it. No candidate was "conservative" enough so they split their vote and made it possible for the moderates to nominate Romney. Now, they whine because we don't have a conservative candidate. If you want the reason, look in a mirror.

The mission now is to defeat Obama and take the senate. We won't be able to accomplish one without the other. To do that, Romney must be elected. There'e a landslide coming in Nov. but it won't be an Obama landslide.

I don’t see how anyone whom calls himself a Conservative could ever vote for Romney.

I don't see how anyone who calls himself an American, could not.

I am fully aware of the form of government we have in this country but apparently you have overlooked the fact that democratic principles are employed in electing our representatives and senators or are you asserting that elections are not democratic.

The majority should prevail as long as their actions pass constitional muster. Unfortunately, the Sixteenth Amendment to the US Constitution allows the federal government to tax incomes without placing any limits whether the tax is progressive or flat or for what purposes the taxes are spent. Obama has consistently advocated higher taxes whereas Romney has not.

If Obama is re-elected, the probabilty of banning arms(not only guns) is dramatically increased because Obama would likely appoint Supreme Court justices who are inclined to totally disarm private citizens. I would be a little less apprehensive in this regard if Romney were elected.

Not Conservative enough - now that’s a real recommendation for Romney.. At least you are honest.

Now just why do you think that you can come her and expect that Conservatives on this site would vote for Romney because he was not Conservative enough?

Wait, I know, you are comparing him to Obama and hoping for votes because he is more Conservative than Obama. Well, if Romney is NOT Conservative without that comparison, then he is not a Conservative and almost everybody is more Conservative than Obama.

So, now why should we vote for Romney? Oh yeah, it’s our mission - forgot. If we don’t elect this liberal Republican this time, we will be in a quandary or is it just out of power? Maybe letting Obama win again will wake up America to their future!

As horrible as Obama is to America; (being radical), we would not be in this dilemma if not for the ruling class wanting a fake conservative as the party's leader. You need a person at the top for the majority of the people to respect. Romney hated Reagan in the 1980's. He does not deserve to be the nominee due to Romneycare. What a mess but it's the truth. It's a shame he maybe rewarded for that and his pro gay marriage stance. He needs to be replaced at convention so the base will come out. It will be a close election with the fraud, look for the dems with the advantage. The GOP done this-we should have had a strong candidate that would get the base excited. No wonder the dems have hope and a strategy. I don't see Romney turning social issues around nor Obamacare. He still feels he did right by banning the Boy Scouts at the Olympics.

1. Gallup has Obama up by 2 (registered voters)

2. Rasmussen has Romney up by 2 (likely voters)

3. "A president’s Job Approval rating is one of the best indicators for assessing his chances of reelection. Typically, the president’s Job Approval rating on Election Day will be close to the share of the vote he receives. Currently, 45% of voters say they at least somewhat approve of the president's job performance. Fifty-three percent (53%) at least somewhat disapprove (see trends)." - Rasmussen Reports

Going over the electoral map, if Obama carries every state where his approval is over 50% and Romney carries the rest, it should be Obama 185 Romney 353.

Not Reagan or Bush 41 landslide territory, but a margin of 168 EV.

I think the author of the article is nuts. My state is not "in play", so I may vote for Johnson and Republican for everything else. If it was going to be close I'd vote for Romney in a heartbeat.

I am fully cognizant of open primaries and the havoc they cause. But those states that have open primaries can act to close them. I would also point out that there has been occasions when conservatives have taken advantage of open primaries to give Democrats headaches. Open primaries are two edged swords.

If people can be swayed by talking heads or party "leaders", there is nothing that can be done about that. Some people can't be bothered to think for themselves while others wish to be thought of as being sophisticated so they go along with the talking heads. It is difficult to overcome human nature but liberals also faced with this problem.

We are probably better off than if Gore or Kerry were elected.

Romney will have it worst than another elected rat. He will have the rats as well as the teaparty conservatives on his tail.
