Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

Calling DOUGHTY ONE pro obama is very stupid on your part. You may want to rethink that statement.

Very cool tagline.I have to disagree with your statement that conservatives are the reason romney is the presumptive nominee. It was open primaries(gop elite is responsible for that) that caused the vote to be watered down.Florida is nothing more than a bunch of transplant libs and I give you the fact that florida went for the obumer in 08.South Carolina was altogether different.

Oh, so we’re supposed to bank on your hypothetical conservative knight in shining armor showing up in 2016. We’re supposed to sit on our hands this election and let a Marxist wreck the country for four years, then we’ll fix it all when Mr. Right comes along. Well that’s a real good plan and stuff, but what happens if he doesn’t come along?

Your problem is that you think you’re hard core when you’re not. The hard truth is that a Reagan only comes along every century or so, and in the meantime you slog through with the imperfect hands you’re dealt. Falling short of the ideal is the norm for life on planet Earth. The only reason you even get to an exceptional Reagan type is because you’ve slogged through in between. Slogging through is how you create the conditions for a Reagan. If you think you get a Reagan every time then you’re not living on planet Earth.

You seem to think you’re acting on some higher principle by sitting around demeaning and demoralizing those of us who are getting ready to grit our teeth and slog through again. You’re like a powdered prince riding on our backs. You’ll only get out and pull for the team when we arrive at the next Reagan. You don’t want to get your little feet dirty.

That's an awesome post.

Don't let the libretarian sect get you down - by their very definition, they only care about themelves and how everything affects them. Taking the long view is not their strong point - as long as they "got theirs", everyone else can go hang.

Don't worry, Zero is going down and he's going down hard.

Ok Doughty, and others..
Lets hear your plan.. Take me down your road to a recovery, the hat trick that you and others have in mind if we take your advice..

I'm serious, I have to admit, that I am as frustrated as many on the fence are, but I haven't ever entertained throwing in the towel.. It's just not in my make-up..

If you had my proxy vote and the votes of, say 5% of conservatives on the political landscape, what will happen in your wet dream, scenario?

If 0bama is re-elected, this country absolutely SUCKS! That doesn’t mean that we don’t have beautiful scenery, a great history, that we didn’t have great people, and that we didn’t have a great constitution. It means the country, that is the people that presently constitute the county as a whole, really do suck because they are throwing away the greatest country in history.
We will have economic collapse and civil war if this POS is re-elected. After that, it will be impossible to restore the republic through legal or political means. The best we coud hope for is a coup or revolution that installs a dictatorship that supports free markets and suppresses the Left.

“I don’t see how anyone whom calls himself a Conservative could ever vote for Romney.”

I will because I consider myself an American first. We have a Communist in the White House now and I want him out. It is really just as simple as that.

Russ, I completely agree with you...First go around I voted for Newt Gingrich...He has been tested and vetted, and is experienced. I am voting Romney, and as you said, concentrate on the senate, and defeat Obama...thanks for responding to my post.

It’s sad that you find idealism to be “infantile.”. Since Romney doesn’t appear to be an idealist of any sort, he should be your dream candidate.

I am still waiting for you one of you Romney cheerleaders to justify his passage of weapons ban, Romneycare, and his support of amnesty. Do you have your head in the sand?

I’m with Hang the Expense. Why won’t any of the Romney supporters tell us the significance of his voting record? I know why not: because they know that Romney is a disaster, and they are hoping that his past record was a fluke.

It’s almost like he is some sort of Etch-a-sketch that shows a new image whenever he chooses..... Romney’s positions on key issues only differs slightly from Obama’s.

A Republican presidency’s purpose is to consolidate Democrat presidency’s gains. There is only one party with 2 wings that continually good cop - bad cop the increasingly Affirmative Action dumber and dumber USA entertainment addicts. The party of incumbent Ivy League lawyers that infest the highest levels of govt.

I see different kinds of bad depending on who gets elected. The author of the original piece, however, blew any claim to objective analysis when he stated “And this odious voter ID law is facing meaningful challenges.”, meaning to win Pennsylvania Philly will have to have 120% turnout again.

Whew! I read all the posts. Here is what I think (hope, pray).

Romney & Co. are waiting for just the right moment to launch their REAL campaign. They have kept their REAL strategy secret. ie. What they will run on, states they will fight for.

Once they reveal their strategy, it will be a little late for Obama to change theirs.

They will unleash an onslaught against Obama that won't let up until election day. Money is not an issue for Romney since he has raised more than Obama, has superpacs AND his own fortune in the Cayman's. I think Romney is ALL IN this cycle. He will do whatever, spend whatever it takes to WIN.

Romney DESTROYED Newt in Florida (with money). He will do the same with Obama.

Do I think this will happen???? I hope and pray it does. If it does.... I hope those of you, like myself, who swore to NEVER vote for Romney, will change your minds and vote for him.

Bob McDonnell for VP, the only SMART choice.

I'm waiting for something to chew on, about a plan that would entice me to throw my vote away, because having a better plan can get me to the finish line, faster! Please present it in simple terms, maybe with bullet points because people as simple as you seem to think we are, need to have it spelled out.. Please show me, us, how and why, doing it your way has a much better outcome than electing a known Marxist!

Obama's re-election, especially if it were a landslide (unlikely), would guarantee the near-term beginning of R2/CW2.

I will never cast a ballot for the liberal Romney. I will hope for a Conservative candidate. If we don’t get one, I will write in Palin.

I wonder who Sarah Palin is going to vote for. After she decided not to run herself, she supported Newt and then he was defeated by the machine. Perhaps she's going to write in Gingrich.

How about we think of what scenarios a second 0bama term will put in cement.

We will be....

disarmed

controlled by the control and dispensation of food, medicines and medical procedures, gasoline, electricity and natural gas

unable to afford to drive distances

forced to move into regional metropolitan centers

persecuted (if Christian, Jewish or a heterophile)

witness to the ever-growing Islamic transformation and ‘revival’ occurring on US soil

made to abandon Israel

forced to pay XY% of our incomes earned to millions of newly legally ‘made’ US citizens

denied our Constitutional rights in favor of UN (read Islamic) rule

These are best-case scenarios.

Worst case is much darker.
