Michael Tomasky on the (Possible) Coming Obama Landslide
The Daily Beast ^ | Aug 4, 2012 | Michael Tomasky

Liberals don't want to jinx it. It terrifies the right. And the press would prefer a nail-biter. But the fact is that finding Romney's path to victory is getting harder every day.

There's a secret lurking behind everything you're reading about the upcoming election, a secret that all political insiders know—or should—but few are talking about, most likely because it takes the drama out of the whole business. The secret is the electoral college, and the fact is that the more you look at it, the more you come to conclude that Mitt Romney has to draw an inside straight like you've never ever seen in a movie to win this thing. This is especially true now that it seems as if Pennsylvania isn't really up for grabs. Romney's paths to 270 are few.

Agreed.

And think it’s bad now? Just wait til after Labor Day. It is going to make these past few weeks for Romney look like a walk in the park.

I so loathe the GOP elite for doing this to us.

Everybody here blames the GOP for Romney, but the awful truth is that conservatives failed to field and back a candidate who could beat Romney.

I despise Romney, but I can’t see actually voting for Obama or effectively voting for him by staying home or casting a protest vote.

The real answer is to work hard to ensure that we get a conservative candidate the next time around no matter what RINO or socialist Dem is in office. The sad truth is it’s easier to post an opinion than work to get a candidate nominated.

I’m definitely guilty of bemoaning our lot with Romney while I did virtually nothing to get a conservative nominated beyond my primary vote and a few bucks donated to a campaign. I wager I’m not the only Freeper in that sorry position.

Yes, afraid we may be beyond the breaking point! Greater than 50% taking government monies.. Greater that 50% paying federal taxes. Closing in on government employees both State and Federal over 50%. When they can outvote the rest of us, we are surely doomed!

Obama’s dream coming true!

We’ve got the same type of candidate we have had for over twenty years, and you’re heralding it as a new day.

Here is a strong dose of reality for you.

If we wind up with 150 Tea Party leaning Conservatives in the House (and I’m only hoping we will, I’m not convinced), what does that leave? Play Jeopardy music here...

What it leaves is about 190 Democrats who loathe anything decent, and 80 to 90 liberal Republicans.

Now please look at those numbers and remind me what a new day we have. 190 plus 80 is 270. Is that enough to pass any Leftist thing Romney wants, or isn’t it?

Sadly it is. What new day? How am I mired in the past? I’m looking at exactly what we’re facing.

Amen. I love your post. I only disagree with one thing. Romney is going to get slaughtered in Nov. The GOP has already given up on PA. Osama has about 245 electoral votes in the bag and Romney is slipping in the swing states every day. McCain looked in better shape this time last time.

I’m already resigned to waiting for 2016.

I am only drawing the obvious conclusions from DO’s posts.

DO specifically expressed that he prefers Obama to be reelected and that Bush nearly destroyed the country.

DO: “At this point the earliest chance we have to install a Conservative is January 2017, and we all know that isn’t going to happen unless Romney does lose now.” (post 12)

DO: “it’s best to let Obama take the nation down, “ (post 25)

DO: “But for the grace of God, George Bush didn’t destroy the nation.” (post 38)

That’s just it. Romney wins and we see more progressive/liberals in the future because that’s what wins. If Romney loses, they just blame the Conservatives as usual and still put up a progressive/liberal the next time. Reagan is the only one who broke the cycle in my lifetime and they forced the liberal Bush on him as VP/next President.

“How old are you, anyway? Are you a child? If not, where were you in 1994?”

Okay...you are an insulting fool.

My first vote was for Nixon while my husband was serving this country in Viet Nam as a Navy pilot in the Gulf of Tonkin, and I relished voting for Reagan four times...first as my governor and second as the best president I’ve seen in my entire lifetime.

In 1994...where do you want me to be?

I didn’t vote to nominate this POS. Don’t you even think of blaming this fiasco on me.

The GOPe and it’s minions pushed for Romeny for all they were worth. You just turn right around and place the blame right where it belongs.

I screamed bloody murder earlier this year. I told everyone here and made phone calls tell others that I wasn’t going to back Romney in the fall.

Guess what. Fall is coming and you’re stuck with a man I will never cast a vote for.

The ultimate Pessimist with no hope of change! You really are a product of NO HOPE = NO FUTURE! You should really peddle your pessimism to the Democratic Party - at least that would make us non-democrats happy.

So why do you talk like the Tea Party is the first-ever conservative revolution?

Go ahead and proudly cast your vote for Romney (R(D)).

Nor did I! What the hell does this have to do with the upcoming election? You are so pessimistic that I can hardly stand to read your responses! My gosh, get a life outside of politics or something...geez!

Not gonna happen D. I’m sorry to disappoint you now, but I made it crystal clear very early this year I would not vote for Romney. He was forced on us anyway.

If I’m not going to vote for Bush because he’s a putz, and I’m not going to vote for McCain because he’s terrible, why would I vote for this chameleon?

The party needs to clean up it’s act. It’s stinking up the nation.

Take care.

Everybody here blames the GOP for Romney, but the awful truth is that conservatives failed to field and back a candidate who could beat Romney.

Please tell me you're not that naive! The Party leaders have more of a say in who "the winner" is than anything else. And the Party leaders chose Romney and gave him their support.

Where the RNC bares blame, is it’s complicity in a system that allows Democrats to help select our nominees. On top of that, it sends out it’s fair haired boys to slam everyone but the most Leftist candidate.

I can see the natural inclination to give the GOPe a pass, but you really shouldn’t. It’s in there trying to defeat a good choice every bit as much as the Democrats who are voting against you and I in the nomination process.
