Group urges convention delegates to 'Dump Romney'
Augusta Free Press ^ | August 10, 2012

Posted on 08/12/2012 9:19:53 AM PDT by delacoert

A social-conservative group is using Mitt Romney’s Mormon beliefs and his record as Massachusetts governor to urge GOP convention delegates to “Dump Romney.”

A memo being circulated by the “Dump Romney” group argues that, given the weak U.S. economy, Romney ought to be leading Democratic incumbent Barack Obama in the polls, instead of trailing by as many as nine points, as the most recent Fox News poll has the race right now.

The group says Republican convention delegates are not bound by convention rules to vote for Romney, and that first-ballot abstentions could lead to the selection of a stronger national ticket in later convention rounds.

A key to the “Dump Romney” effort is anti-Mormon in nature. A press release from the group brings up issues with the Mormon religion including its “exotic beliefs” that the Garden of Eden was in Missouri and that Jesus is Satan’s brother to paint the picture that independent and Republican voters in swing states in the Bible belt like Virginia and North Carolina will desert the GOP in droves.

The press release also calls Romney “America’s Founding Father of Gay Marriage” for the same-sex weddings that were authorized by Massachusetts courts during his time as governor.

The memo, titled “Dump Romney: Why Tampa’s Republican Delegates must Dump Romney to Defeat Obama,” is available on Amazon.com and DumpRomney.org. It was produced by a group called Jews and Christians Together, and edited by Sara and David Bethel.

The aim of the “Dump Romney” movement is to “provide thoughtful, responsible and dutiful Republican delegates with a pathway out of their and our nation’s very serious problem, that the Republican Party is on the brink of nominating a sure loser,” said Steve Baldwin, a contributor and former executive director of the Council for National Policy, a Washington, D.C.,-based conservative think tank.

I do not know what has gotten into some of the FRpers, but with Rep. Paul Ryan on the ticket we have an opportunity to dump Obama. Mitt Romney WAS NEVER my first, second, or even third choice, but all the rest of the conservatives dropped out. Right now I am getting much more worried about the course of the direction this country is heading. This is a rescue mission we are talking about.

“Virtually every word of their grievences has been taken verbatim from posts on this forum. I have no doubt the people behind this movement are Freepers.”

I don’t see that as an immunizing qualification. I do see the pregnant timing of this effort as more than futile sour grapes.

Also, I’ve gotten several comments relating to what if... would I still vote ABO. The answer is yes, but with the qualification that this effort is merely a malignant hope to tamp down enthusiasm for the now Romney - Ryan ticket and is despicable.

"Even Romney’s team said they worked on ObamaCare."

You're falling for Axlerod's propaganda. Here's what "Romney's Team" is saying:
A leading conservative think tank, The Heritage Foundation, helped design Romneycare, and its health care analyst, Bob Moffit, flew to Boston for the bill signing.
Romneycare was also supported by Regina Herzlinger, Harvard Business School professor and health policy analyst for the conservative Manhattan Institute. Herzlinger praised Romneycare for making consumers, not business or government, the primary purchasers of health care.
RomneyCare was enacted only after Mitt balanced the state budget.
We know what Romney’s goal was when he passed his health care plan. His goal was to involve the private sector of Massachusetts in insuring a small percentage of the Massachusetts’ residents [who didn't have health insurance and who were receiving free health care from the government.]

Romney’s advisor: The two laws are, in the words of Jonathan Gruber, who helped design both the Romney and Obama plans, “the same f***ing bill.”
youtube video of Gruber: said he advised on both bills.
http://www.c-spanvideo.org/program/303580-1
Maybe just maybe Romney did not know his advisers on his government mandated insurance bill also consulted on Obama’s, I do not know.
Maybe just maybe the MSM has exaggerated Romney’s roll, I do not know.
What I do know is that ObamaCare is modeled after RomneyCare.
There is much information on RomneyCare vs ObamaCare, and Romney’s advisers saying they advised, consulted, wrote both bills.
I know a few people from MA and they are not thrilled with the healthcare bill, it is costing more with fewer services and bill are still uninsured.
However, I live in California so it does not matter who I vote, for president, for this state has already been bought by Obama.

You’ve correctly assessed it. This is a rescue mission. My first choice was Santorum (if Palin wasn’t going to run.) But Romney is OK, in my book. I am ecstatic about Ryan being added to the ticket. Ryan will keep the campaign focused on what is important.

I just caught an ad by Fox News Channel. Tomorrow they are launching “Mundo Fox” — a Spanish language news channel. I hope and pray that they are at least as “fair and balanced” as the regular Fox. If they are, this should help the Republicans in November. We don’t have to win the entire hispanic vote — just a few percentage points of it.

If Romney is dumped, why do any of you care.......

I don’t care. I would love to see Romney dumped and a real conservative put in his place. I would vote for his replacement in a heartbeat. It would be nice to not have to bring a barf bag into the voting booth for a change.

That said; it’s not going to happen. The GOP nominee is Romney; so just ordered my 2012 barf bag.

In my city almost everyone votes by mail, so if I capitulate and vote for a liberal (and I will not know until I am holding that pen in my hand drunker than a skunk) because I will be doing so with an empty bottle of Scotch next to me.
And thankfully I wont remember doing so the next day.

Regina Herzlinger, Harvard Business School professor and health policy analyst for the conservative Manhattan Institute. Herzlinger praised Romneycare for making consumers, not business or government, the primary purchasers of health care.

If Ms. Herzlinger (like so many others) is not aware that there is a difference between medical insurance and medical care, perhaps she should be in another line of work. In any case, I believe the insurers (public or private) remain the purchasers of medical treatment, and for the most part employers and gov't remain the purchasers of medical insurance.

His goal was to involve the private sector of Massachusetts in insuring a small percentage of the Massachusetts’ residents [who didn't have health insurance and who were receiving free health care from the government.]

So now those who couldn't afford insurance have MassHealth (Medicaid), including many who had been eligible but hadn't signed up for it. So more people are receiving "free" health care.

And MA has a whole new bureaucracy (just what we needed -- NOT!) to supervise and make sure every one is paying for all 53 MA mandated benefits and fine them when they don't. Sure sounds conservative to me! :(

The aim of the media’s over-reporting on the pathetic “Dump Romney” movement is to ....

GET OBAMA RE-ELECTED.

I have worked hard to stay out of these disscussions concerning supporting Romney or not. But you pose an interesting point.

You stated, "The Republican party establishment would never trust a conservative again, knowing that we wouldn’t support the candidate who won the primary."

My question, which I answered for myself long ago, is why should conservatives ever trust the Republican party, managed by their established leaders, again?

If the rank and file of the GOP support the GOP-E, why should any Constitutional Conservative find home in the Republican Party? Of course if many of them are Conservatives In Name Only, then the "I support the Republican candidate simply because he/she is not a Democrat" really takes on a huge message that the GOP really doesn't want "Conservatives" in their mix any longer! If that is the case, which I believe it is, why shouldn't "Conservatives" look for a new home or build one thmeselves?

Just food for thought, and I don't really want to get into a huge back and forth about it.

You mean "Jon Gruber, Deputy Assistant Secretary for Economic Policy" for Bill Clinton? You're making my point that you're buying the Axlerod propaganda. There is significant information available pointing out that Romneycare rellies on private insurance, while Obama is aiming to get a single payer government system. You are apparently just chosing not to believe it.

Knowing that Mitt has a high tolerance level for voting irregularities I think i see how we are going to have to do this ~ and it won’t be pretty.

I think it is a valid point. But if a conservative doesn’t want to trust the party, they should join another party, and not vote in the republican primary.

If Newt Gingrich had won, I would have expected the delegates at the convention to honor their commitment, and I’d expect the RNC and the other GOP organizations to get behind him. If they didn’t, then we’d know not to trust them.

I like Paul Ryan and would vote for the ticket if he were at the top. Unfortunately, Paul Ryan will have as much influence on the Romney administration as the WH janitor. He's window dressing to try and get the conservatives on board.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the son of George Romney who led the walk out of the 1964 convention to protest Goldwater had the same thing happen to his son?

The Romney family has been fighting the Goldwater and Reagan Revolutions for two generations now. Even if Romney doesn't win the Presidency and then use his power within the party to squash the conservative movement, he's already created more chaos in the conservative movement than Obama ever could. He's created a bitter fight (which the FR is the front lines) between the Purists and the Pragmatics which isn't likely to end at the election.
