Todd Akin will stay in Senate race, apologizes on Huckabee radio show
St. Louis Post ^ | Monday August 20, 2012

U.S. Rep. Todd Akin apologized on Mike Huckabee's radio show today for comments he made about rape, and said he will remain in Missouri's U.S. Senate race.

"I'm not a quitter," Akin said.

"We all make mistakes," Akin said, disowning his previous comments. "The many people who supported me know that when you make a mistake what you need to do is say you're sorry."

Akin said no party leaders have called him and asked for him to drop out.

"This was a very very serious error," Akin said.

“Oh well.....let’s see if we can weather this storm”

Doubt we can. The election becomes about rape. Not about Obama’s rape of the country.

This is another Sharron Angle or Dan Maes (Colorado Governors race 2010). Unqualified candidate in a race we should have won.

I don’t see anyone outside of Missouri giving a damn about this guy.

You don't remember Tom Foley, do you?

Or the almost governor of Texas who lost what should have been an easy election to Ann Richards in 1990?

Nobody even remembers his name now. But nobody has forgotten his gaffe.

The GOP only pulls the rug out from under true conservatives.

You stated that force was the very nature of rape. Not statutory rape, necessarily.

Of course, Sharron Angle and Ken Buck, they didn’t get elected “because of the GOP.”

You can’t fix stupid, and you sure as heck can’t defend it, and this guy came off sounding about as intelligence as a jar filled with rocks. He’s coming off even worse now as he’s tried to explain it away on Huckabee and Hannity.

>> Steelman finished third in the primary. John Brunner was the runner-up. <<

So what? There's no rule that the 2nd place finisher in the primary gets to be slated if the nominee drops out.

There’s no way you can piss off half of the electorate to the degree Akin did and get elected. Women already lean to the Left more than men. The damage of his comment doesn’t even need to be magnified by the liberal media. There is zero chance for redemption and all he does is threaten to take the rest of the Republicans down with him.

Exactly right. His statement is so monstrously stupid I cannot believe anyone would defend him.

What if he said the earth is shaped like a solid pyramid and the sun orbits the earth, would people still be defending him? Well his statement about a woman’s body being able to prevent pregnancy while being legitimately raped is even dumber.

For the good of his family, party and country he should resign immediately. I suspect anyone who is capable of saying something so stupid also has a room temperature IQ. Someone that dumb will not be able to see the scorn he will receive and catastrophic defeat he will surely be dealt.

Where is the proof that a woman is not less likely to get pregnant from a forcible rape? The liberals haven’t offered any. He was simply repeating what is written on several Christian web sites about rape and pregnancy that you can easily check. Liberals are attacking those sites as well, yet offering absolutely no evidence to the contrary that I’ve seen.

The man is an idiot, plain and simple. The guy as an IQ that tops off at 75 — on a good. Get rid of him.

And no amount of “splainin” after the fact by this “random yahoo” is going to overcome his tarring Republican candidates nationally who will have to spend much time in disassociating from his remarks rather than talking about the economy. This distraction needs to go.

Are you referring to Romney constantly trying to explain why he won't release his tax returns?

Democrats will be a laughing stock if they try to stretch this nonsense, trivial gaffe into a major campaign push for the next 10 weeks.

The statement is beyond stupid. When someone says something so scientifically ludicrous they better have scientific proof to back it up. You don’t ask others to prove you wrong and when they don’t then assume what you said is a scientific fact.

Not only has he shot himself in the foot politically but his ability to raise further campaign contributions will dry up.

The only traitors to the cause are the people responsible for this. THESE are the asinine-holes who would willingly lose an election to the Democrats that everyone on this forum should be angry with.

Sometimes I wonder if the words just start tumbling forth and the person hears himself saying them, CANNOT BELIEVE what is coming out of his mouth, and yet cannot seem to stop the words from spewing forth, knowing the HELLLL that the press will raise about it later.

No it isn’t a stupid statement at all. You’re being ignorant by dismissing a scientific opinion without even considering it, sort of like those people who refused to believe the earth was round. Just Google for the info on this before you claim it’s false. He never claimed it was an absolute fact, he simply said this is what he understands doctors have said, and the same info from doctors is out there on the web.

http://www.prolifeinfo.ie/women/sexual-assault/pregnancy-as-a-result-of-rape/

Pregancy from rape is rare

THIS MAY BE BECAUSE:

Many women are infertile at the time they are raped - they may be in the infertile phase of their monthly cycle, too old or too young to conceive

Trauma from the rape may bring into play some natural defence mechanisms that reduce the likelihood of pregnancy, such as hormonal change and spasms of the fallopian tubes which inhibit ovulation or fertilisation

Rape does not always involve a complete act of sexual intercourse - ejaculation may not occur - or the rapist may be infertile

The chance of conception resulting from a single act of unprotected intercourse even between consenting fertile individuals has been estimated at only 2 to 4%

It is asinine to defend his comment. Because he only mentioned the one possibility regards forcible rape (and like an idiot didn’t even call it that), of a woman’s body “shutting it down”. Don’t get into stats about pregnancy from rape because obviously not all women who are raped are of childbearing years and ovulating, and because that wasn’t what he said!
