Disheartening, but not unexpected. I agree Akin has to go. Like it or not, the reality is his gaffe has destroyed his chances at winning the Senate race. What he said isn’t a case of “stand up, chuck” or “all 57 states”, it’s in the league of George Romney’s brainwashing comment of Jerry Ford’s assertion that Poland wasn’t under Soviet domination in 1976. He’s not going to get out from under this in time for election day, and is likely making matters worse through his refusal to step down.
As for Missouri, though, I believe it can still be won even with the Akin factor. He’s hurt the GOP, no question. But I do believe enough voters will look at more than just Akin to make victory possible there. Republicans at every level will have to disown Akin - not just distance themselves from him, but completely disown him - but I think it can be done. Of course, it would be better to make the Akin matter go away entirely by getting him to step down in favor of a Sarah Steelman or the like. I’m just saying that I wouldn’t write of Missouri just yet.
This to you and every one else that keeps telling the world what an idoit Akin is, and how he needs to go.
As of right now, he’s not getting out, like it or not. In fact, the more people howl for him to get out, the more he digs his heels in. As it stands right now, the GOPe, national organizations like the NRSC and Crossroads, and such have abandoned the state of Missouri; leaving Missouri Conservatives with a damaged candidate, and no help what so ever. In fact, what people outside the state keep doing is dragging Akin through the mud, giving McCaskill even more help.
McCaskill is deflatable, even by an oh so damaged Akin. Yes, she is that bad and disliked in the state. It’s an up hill battle, and it looks like Missouri voters are going to have do with Akin and by ourselves. So I ask this of everyone on FR, who is not from Missouri.
Shut up and quit carping about it, making it worse for us. No amount of your punditry is going to change things. Things are taking place behind the scenes to get him to leave the race; I am sure. We have until Sept. 25th for him to legally drop out; although I think Sept. 11th is a more likely date they are shooting for. That’s when discounted TV spots expire, and the price for TV time goes up dramatically, if what the news says is true. All the complaining does is give the Libs fodder, keeps the issue fresh on people’s minds, and works on our nerves.
You want to help us, remind anyone you meet that has an opinion about it that Akin may have some something incredibly dumb; he’s still head and shoulders better than McCaskill is on her best day, though.
Full disclosure, I voted for John Brunner, and am not an Akin fan; even before his little gaffe. Since he is the candidate, for now, I am going to support him and work my hardest to help him defeat McCaskill. It’s that important.
What this means to me is that even with Akin gaffe 24/7, Obama can only muster a one-point lead. That will fade by November.
I’d still like to see Akin out but I don’t think this means Obama is going to win Missouri. It would be just as terrible, though, if the GOP can’t take back the Senate because Akin blew our chance.
If EVERY Republican answers like that, the Akin issue will be largely minimized.

Lots of people are evidently from the ‘turn your brain off at the door’ school of principled thought.
Akins haters: keep stabbing him in the back. You apparently can’t see the blood you are getting on the whole party and yourselves. You are so blinded by your hate, you can’t see the harm you yourself are doing. You want Akins out, you’ll lose the election, if you haven’t already. In or out, the liberals will attack him. They will attack anyone running against Obama, even if they have to make it up. Do you really think there will not be another story blown out of proportion next week?
The RNC and hateful remarks like on this thread (that is all it was meant to be-dump on Akins and his supporters) will be what causes many in the base to walk Remember we are the ones who stand outside the church property and make sure everyone is registered to vote and hand out voter guides. We did that because of our faith & we believe all abortion is wrong and that homosexuality, especially pushed on our kids is wrong. We don’t do it for the party. We do it for our kids and because we obey God. Our convictions motivate us, not hatred.
Also remember this is a conservative site, not a republican site, ask Jim. I do think of him as a wise person (read some of his articles) who sits above and watches everything going on down here. He is a humble man and would not accept the wise label, but he is.

The title is "Shining Some Sunlight on the Governments Finances" and she is bragging about .......I teamed up with one of the most conservative members of the Senate, Republican Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, to introduce legislation forcing the Pentagon to get its act together and produce a basic financial audit.
I am not sure it would be proper to post the whole email, but I wanted people to get a flavor of the Claire campaign. I cannot get rid of the non-stop nausea, as I watch this circus pass me by.
If there are that many people determined to murder the unborn, the weak, the old, the ‘undesirables; determined to take what isn’t rightfully theirs; what we do to fix the economy won’t make a whit of difference. The further we move away from God, the faster we will slide into the Abyss.
If there are that many people determined to murder the unborn, the weak, the old, the ‘undesirables’; determined to take what isn’t rightfully theirs; what we do or don’t do to fix the economy won’t make a whit of difference either. The further we move away from God, the faster we will slide into the Abyss.
If I can throw in my two cents’ worth. I’m pretty much always black and white on most issues. However on this I offer a couple of different perspectives. On the one hand as far as tactics and strategy go there’s no question Akin should leave.
He absolutely makes it harder if not downright impossible to win this Senate seat absent another game-changing event as well as making it more difficult for Romney in the state.
I think one angle I’ve seen but has been underplayed is let’s pretend he somehow wins — I don’t think Congressman Akin is prepared to be a U.S. Senator. He seems to show a lack of political awareness that may not serve him well if he ever needed it whatever his past voting record may be.
For these reasons he should withdraw and let one more able to win and/or govern (my personal view is that a woman would be a much more viable choice at this point such as Steelman or Wagner).
With all this said I agree with others on here that with all the many, many, many weaknesses, gaffes and general weak record of most Democrats if we can’t win the Senate and Presidency in spite of this one mistake we don’t deserve to win. As much as all want to view this one mistake as destroying all Republican efforts, the Dems have supposedly according to our side [which I agree] had several of these (give me space, private sector’s doing fine, you didn’t build it, put y’all in chains, DWS’s weak performances, etc, etc). McCaskill is very weak as well as are 5 to 8 other Senate Dems up this year.
We can take nothing for granted and again Akin should drop out but let’s not let this one issue destroy our enthusiasm, motivation and confidence in winning this thing.
This could be viewed as an ethical problem, assuming there actually exists people who honestly believe that Akin is being unjustly asked to leave the race by the GOP. (Most are probably dishonest trolls, though)
I come down on the side of utilitarianism - we should save the most people possible at the expense of one (Akin) if necessary. No categorical imperative here.

It’s not Akins fault, it all the stupid people that live in Missouri. If they are going to hold Romney accountable for Akins comments, that are positively stupid. Then again, this is the same state that elected McCaskill in the first place! Also remember the voted in the widow of Mel Carnahan back in 2000 when she took over his race when he died.
Missourians are stupid. They deserve McCaskill and 0bama.
(I say this with all due respect to our fellow FReepers in Missouri who do know better than most of their fellow citizens and will now suffer because of them.)
Obama has about as much chance of winning Missouri as a cow flying.
Are republicans going to vote for Obama now. And I predict that Akin will call it quits next week.
Thanks a lot, Akin. You just re-elected Obama!
This idiot is killing the GOP everywhere. What a pig.
“As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akins legitimate rape comment continues, Mitt Romneys lead in Missouri has vanished.”
Posters should not get hysterical over this — at least not yet.
Visit the source page of the article above. Romney’s polling numbers in Missouri have been all over the place. As it is, Obama’s “lead” of 47-46 is within the margin of error.
It will take at least one more survey by Rasmussen before we get a clearer picture of how the election is “firming up” there.
