As the Legislature adjourned for three months last Friday, the Capitol turned its attention to the Nov. 6 election, and particularly three – or perhaps four – state Senate contests whose outcomes could affect the balance of legislative power.
Democrats now hold 25 of the Senate's 40 seats. If they were to gain two more this year, they would have a two-thirds supermajority and could pass certain kinds of legislation, such as tax increases, without Republican votes.
That power would increase pressure on Republicans in the Assembly, who, it's assumed, will continue to hold more than a third of its seats and therefore could, if they hang together, block tax increases.
Such solidarity, however, is not guaranteed. This year, Assembly Speaker John A. Pérez was able to peel off enough Republicans to win Assembly approval of his measure that would raise taxes on some multistate corporations by more than $1 billion a year.

Democrats may win a 2/3 majority of the California state Senate. If that happens, they’ll have an even freer hand to wreck the state than they do now.

LOL, California is a joke. I almost hope the liberals get a CA Senate super majority so they can finish running the state completely into the ground. There really is no hope at all for CA to turn around till it can’t borrow any more and goes completely broke. Even then, I am not sure Californians are capable of making the connection between the liberals they vote for and the pathetic mess their state is in. I can’t really understand why any conservative would want to stay there. All conservatives should just leave, we could really use your help bolstering our ranks in places like Colorado, Virginia, North Carolina, etc. Let California collapse without you.

my way of thinking, i have been to california, live in illinois.
i always think the best way to handle the problem is that all conservative businesses, manufacturing, etc., just massively flee the rat states and move to business friendly states.
let the dipwad actors support the great state of california and see how long that lasts.
they would be down loading their depends with their own waste.
they say that the country is divided. Great! let’s divide ourselves and see who lasts the longest.

It’s hard to believe that as late as the 1980’s, Californians elected a conservative Republican, George Deukmejian, to two terms as governor.
Our last chance to turn things around was the recall election of 2003. Had Arnold Schwarzenegger not jumped in at the last minute, we probably would have elected Tom McClintock, a solid conservative and an expert on government finance, to the state house.
Dems won’t be happy until they have driven this state into the abyss.. and even then, they’ll b*tch..
In the 50’s and 60’s California was conservative and had one of the best education systems and economies in the world.
When the Democrats took over California it went into the toilet.

California is only a few miles away from me, and I already look at them they’re Soviet era East Germany.
I used to wonder why Californian liberals flood into Nevada every Labor Day for that Burning Man festival out in Blackrock desert. California has all kinds of desert for the hippies to drop acid and screw in under the stars, so why do they come to my state, necessarily?
Then I found out that they were to hold Burning Man in California, every participant would have to buy some kind of ‘Wilderness Fun Pass’ and have proof of insurance, and off road permits for their vehicles, and the Burning Man outfit would need a BLM permit witha CA added fee, pay for police and EMS services, pay for environmental impact reports, garbage collection, roadway repair, and per acre licensing fees whenever the state ecologists found a spot that didn’t impact the habitat of the three-titted Mojave pup-gnat. Even with all that, when the hippies finally got settled in the high strung California law enforcement officers would probably find reason to justifiably shoot a few hippies and their hippie dogs.
They have to come to my state to act free. Labor Day ends, and they all flood back to Gulag San Francisco in their playa dust covered hippie wagons, back to confiscatory tax rates and a trillion dollars in public debt.
Unlike Woodstock, one would be hard pressed to find any evidence that the Burning Man event takes place in BRD every year. The organization that puts this event on takes great pride in leaving no trace behind. They thoroughly police themselves in terms of taking care of the environment.
I know. We all know. They remind us every year, as if anyone cares.
There is no environment out in Black Rock Desert to speak of, really. It's an ancient sea bed with nothing on it from one horizon to another. One good winter's worth of snow will erase all trace of humankind's visit when the entire playa turns into a mud plain one foot deep come spring.
It's nice that they pick up their trash, of course. You're supposed to do that anyway, not get special credit for it.
This is the state where the US government detonated 1100+ nuclear bombs in underground tests. You really can't hurt Nevada or louse up the joint very much.
Hey, they're welcome to come. It's California that would make it miserable on them if they wanted to hold Burning Man at Trona Pinnacles down in Death Valley, or something. That's my point.

I live here too and have done so for most of my life. Isn’t it wonderful how these “Rhodes Scholars” come on FR and pontificate about California and other than what they read, they know about as much about this state as the Man in the Moon. I guess with a blog like FR, you have to take the idiots with their big mouths along with those who make thoughtful contributions to the discourse. The other thing that they miss is that California is the Elephant in the Room when it comes to how bad things are getting, and the only difference between CA and most other states is the magnitude of the problem. I guess if you are down in Swollen Groin, TX, or some such place “you just know that you are right and everyone else needs to listen to you!”
BTW Taxachusetts has been doing for years what CA is just starting, the only difference is that no one really cares about MA because its just a flea on the Elephants butt.
