New rules on school meals inspired by Michelle Obama were intended to wipe out hunger and malnutrition among American students - but some are complaining they have had the opposite effect.
High schools are now forbidden from giving pupils more than 850 calories for their lunch - even if they are fast-growing teenagers or even student athletes.
One enterprising group of adolescents channelled their anger at the policy into a parody YouTube video promoting their cause entitled 'We Are Hungry'.
The new restrictions were mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law during the lame-duck period of the last Congress in December 2010.
Now that the rules have come into effect for the new school year, many are concerned that some adolescents are being denied the quantities of food they need.
Student athletes can burn through as many as 5,000 calories a day - but they are still entitled to no more than 850 calories for their lunch.
Even though recommended calorie intake is different for males and females, the restrictions are the same for both boys and girls.

As much as I like the Daily Mail for at least writing stories our media won't touch they still show their bias by not keeping the most defamatory towards Democrats on their page long. This was initially posted as the top story at 2am last night but was gone from the front page altogether by at least 11am this morning despite the massive number of comments it generated.
This one really has the dem spinmeisters scared as it has the potential to undermine their younger demographic from the bottom up. High school kids practically live online and have great presence there.
850 calories for lunch is a pretty good amount and 1/3 of the average for a kid.
But, if kids won’t eat humus, pita bread and other foods they don’t eat at home then they aren’t going to get their MDA(Michelle Daily Allowance) for calories or nutrition.
Most parents don’t serve broccoli to their kids because most parent don’t like em.
Me? I’ll eat broccoli all day long. Love it but, my friends cringe at the thought.
“Student athletes can burn through as many as 5,000 calories a day - but they are still entitled to no more than 850 calories for their lunch.”
That sounds like concentration camp levels; how does that fat-assed sow keep a straight face?
An average size kid, 170 pounds or so, will burn 1200-15— calories per basketball practice.
Anybody that has gone through Marine Corps or Army BCT knows the hunger pangs from burning more calories than you are taking in. I was always hungry.
Mustard!!!
Copious if not massive amounts of mustard !
Enough mustard and I could eat gravel!

I second that!
Home viewing bookmark. Even the kids get it.
I happen to LOVE hummus & warm pita, BUT I also grew up w/ it. If you’re a kid & have never eaten that kind of food it is going to be disgusting to the majority of kids. Throw in the peer pressure that says it’s disgusting & even the small group who do like it might feel compelled to pretend otherwise.
I work at an elementary school & they crazily give the pre-K kids the same amount of food at lunch as the growing & BIG 3rd grade boys & girls. It makes no sense. We should just go back to parents making their kids lunches, but we have created such a nanny state that many kids would have nothing as their parent would be outraged at being asked to actually do a parental task such as making a school lunch.
Actually, working at a public school for the first time is what turned me conservative on many issues. Sad, but true!
For Progressives, “choice” only applies to abortion, and they would prefer that be mandatory as well.
It was on Drudge but I don’t see it there anymore. . .maybe I missed it. I can’t believe that it hasn’t gone viral. It is really well done! It certainly isn’t healthy for the athletes especially to be on such a low calorie diet.
Spread the word on this video. Let’s have some sanity in this country!!!!!!
Moochelle’s guidelines are perfect for a forty something woman who wants to lose her thunder thighs. I wish she would get on with it, because then she can quit projecting and leave the rest of us alone.

You forgot cheese sauce or ranch dip.
The kids did great in the video.
I think if I were those athletes I would get an attorney sooner rather than later. Based upon their ability not to reach their optimal potential because of insufficient caloric intake. Lack of energy could mean poor performance. . .translating into no scholarships. This could have long reaching affects on earning potential not to mention future health related issues.
Maybe there is a pro bono attorney out there that would take it on!
***If youre a kid & have never eaten that kind of food it is going to be disgusting to the majority of kids.***
I remember when Pizza was first served at our school back in 1963. Most of the kids threw it away as they never heard of it.
Our school served good food. You could even go back for seconds. The only school that served bad food, and I mean REALLY BAD, was Aztec NM back in 1956. Many of the kids threw up, even me. I then began to take my own lunch and mom made some real good lunch meat sandwiches.
You’re right, libs abhor choice. I suspect this whole meals program has much more to do with brainwashing kids to accept deep levels of government intrusion into their lives than it does with food. The kids did a great job on the video and I hope it becomes a rallying cry leading to the scrapping of the whole program.
my neighbor just told me her kids cannot buy an extra carton of milk, BUT they can go over to the vending machine and buy all the soda they want.
Sounds to me like the school doesn’t make money off the milk but they do off of the vending machines......so much for the kids!
This is an easy problem to solve. The federal lunch program only reimburses the school district IF they issue free and reduced lunches.
Granted many high school cafes offer TOO MANY choices, most of which are heat and eat type of foods. You should see that amount that gets prepared and thrown away daily.
Study after study has shown that a high school can offer a very nutritional as well as good tasting lunch for right at the same price that they do it for now. Parents should pack their kids lunches for about a month, the school cafeteria will get the message loud and clear. IMO, they can offer sandwiches, veggies - yes kids will eat them if they actually look good, some snacks and drinks.
