We're hungry! Students revolt over Michelle Obama's 850-calorie school meals with online video
Daily Mail ^ | 9/24/12 | Daily Mail Reporter

New rules on school meals inspired by Michelle Obama were intended to wipe out hunger and malnutrition among American students - but some are complaining they have had the opposite effect.

High schools are now forbidden from giving pupils more than 850 calories for their lunch - even if they are fast-growing teenagers or even student athletes.

One enterprising group of adolescents channelled their anger at the policy into a parody YouTube video promoting their cause entitled 'We Are Hungry'.

The new restrictions were mandated by the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010, signed into law during the lame-duck period of the last Congress in December 2010.

Now that the rules have come into effect for the new school year, many are concerned that some adolescents are being denied the quantities of food they need.

Student athletes can burn through as many as 5,000 calories a day - but they are still entitled to no more than 850 calories for their lunch.

Even though recommended calorie intake is different for males and females, the restrictions are the same for both boys and girls.

Yep.

I was saying for the average kid.

When I was in High School I hated their food.

Pizza, Uck.

Sloppy Joes. Blech!

Spaghetti. Gag!

You name it, I couldn’t stand the taste of it.

So I brought my own lunch or something Mom made and was leftover. Nothing like cold fried chicken or left over enchilada pie.

You should see that amount that gets prepared and thrown away daily.

Rather than throw it away, why not feed the homeless or at least take it to the shelter.
Must be good food, government bought and prepared so Health Department should be happy.

BUT, like Kramer says, “Even the homeless won’t eat the day old bagels”.

I never liked the food from school. Probably why I can’t stand pizza, spaghetti and a few other foods.

I always brought my food.

I too grew up eating just about anything and will eat most things.

But, whatever that taste is in cafeteria food I can’t stand it.

BTW, had humus, falafels and a the inside of a real nice koubby.

No one makes em better than “Falafel Drive in”. They’ve been around every since I can remember and I recall the day my Dad took me for the 1st time. My thought it was weird, I loved it.

I was the oldest of 5. I was never a picky eater and we didn’t need a garbage disposal because I filled that role during my growing years. :-}

I really think that parents should be feeding their own kids.

Arguing for better school lunches goes against my conservative grain.

I asked that and was told that because it was federal money and “open food” that we couldn’t give it to the shelter across the street. One of many “head scratching” moments while teaching at an inner city school.

LOL

I would actually eat that but, I’m guessing they get way more oil and seasoning in their food than you would get in a public meal.

I love crunchy quinoa with a little balsamic vinegar.

ketchup is my second choice if mustard isn't available.

I just find ketchup to be too sweet for my tastes.

Oh, you have to have lots of both. And plenty of sweet relish and chopped onions as well.

How did this happen? How did the Holy Couple impose their will on schoolchildren throughout the country?

Warning - they have done, are doing, and will do the same thing in other areas of life.
