Where is All the Election Signage?

BEGIN TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: People are sending me e-mails, folks. I got a note from a guy who was just in Washington. He said he couldn't find any evidence that there's a presidential campaign there. He didn't find any Obama signs. He didn't find any Obama bumper stickers. (Not much on Romney, either.) I got a story here from the Raleigh News & Observer: "At UNC-Chapel Hill, Finding Volunteers for Obama Campaign is Harder This Time."

Four years ago here in south Florida where we live, there were college kids all over the place carrying Obama signs and passing out Obama bumper stickers, and there's none of that. You know, I'm pretty much a recluse, so I have to ask people what's going on. (chuckles) Nobody's seeing them. There aren't any Obama signs out there. I don't even see Obama bumper stickers. I see some old 2008 stuff, but there's nothing new.

The guy that wrote me from Washington said there's no indication whatsoever that there's a presidential campaign going on, even in the DC suburbs. There are no Obama bumper stickers or paraphernalia on the Upper West Side of Manhattan, and that's the belly of the beast. It really is weird. There is no automatic... It doesn't seem right, and I don't know what to make of this, if anything, by the way. 'Cause this is all anecdotal.

Maybe it's been decided it's a waste of money, all these yard signs and bumper stickers, but it's a big difference from 2008. There's no spontaneous combustion enthusiasm out there, certainly not for Obama. Nothing like there was in 2008.

BREAK TRANSCRIPT

RUSH: Now, don't misunderstand me out there, folks, when we were talking about the lack of Obama signage out there. There isn't a whole lot of Romney signage, either, that anybody sees. I mean, there's some. But it's odd. It's a presidential campaign. It's an election that many people feel is the most crucial and important in their lifetimes, and maybe in the lifetime of the country because the future of the country's at stake and what kind of country we're gonna be.

And in certain states, you travel around, and there's no indication that anything is going on for either candidate. You don't see a lot of Romney stuff out there; you don't see a lot of Obama stuff. So if you go into a state where it is assumed to be a slam-dunk Obama state, like New Jersey, and you don't see any signage, what would you think? What would you think it means?

You'd probably think that Romney's not lighting any fires, right? If you're in New Jersey, a definite Democrat state, and there's no Romney sign, maybe -- maybe -- there's no prayer there, or no energy, no enthusiasm. I don't know. It's just is weird, given how crucially important to so many people this election is, and yet eyeball evidence is that there really isn't one going on. Yet it is the only subject in the media, for the most part. It's fascinating.

Candidates aren't going to spend money where the result is a foregone conclusion.

Results in 2008

Washington, DC - Obama 93% McCain 7%

New York State - Obama 63% McCain 36%

Unfortunately, I’ve seen plenty of Obozo stickers in the DC area. You would expect them inside the beltway but you see them in Fairfax County VA as well.

Baraq been good for NoVa.

That was obvious when I visited there in the spring.

Easy to see why folks there are feeling good.

Even less than that here. In terms of both yard signs and bumper stickers, I’m seeing probably 1/5th of what I saw back in either 2008 or 2004. If anything, I’m even highballing it at that percentage! It’s like it’s not even election season at all. Extremely strange. Nobody much is even talking politics, when I visit my normal venues.

I’m assuming the Obama voters are pretty down and despondent, while the GOP folks seem to view Romney as an untrustworthy yankee liberal. So, there’s just so little basic interest, it appears (and I say that trying my very best not to impose my own subjective attitude).

I see quite a few signs and some bumper stickers here in rural NW Wisc, for both parties’ candidates, but in large part not in the same yards where I’ve seen them in the past.

One other weird thing is, I took a drive around a nearby lake over the weekend, where the relatively rich people live, and noticed that almost all the “For Sale” signs that proliferated there up ‘til a month or so ago are gone, and there’s almost nothing there but Obama/Biden signs (but no signs for down-ticket races, unlike most other yards in the area). Don’t know what to make of all that.

You are onto the reason - in this environment, it’s hard to maintain neighborly relationships with folks on the other side. We look at them as enemies of America as founded, and they look at us as bigots, homophobes, polluters, etc.

Obama voters don’t want to admit it.

Romney voters don’t want to be vandalized.

I don’t think signs matter any more.

You see some idiots put 100 signs on their front lawn. What is that supposed to do?

Why identify yourself to the enemy? When any door to door people show up, I tell them I’m busy.

It’s a different world.

Just vote and make sure family and good friends vote.

People are afraid to express their affiliation these days. Put a Romney sign on your yard and you’ll find your cat dead on your porch or swastikas painted on your house.

Bumper sticker = car keyed.

I got a feeling Romney voters are keeping their heads down and the tidal wave will come Nov 6th.

Picture the bad guys strolling across an empty field toward thousands of foxholes full of us.

The calm before the storm.

Maybe the banks are hoping to collect the fire insurance on the vacant houses they can't sell?

The Grim Election

No one is excited about their choice. Both candidates have terrible flaws for their base. No signs. Not stickers. No joy.

I see a lot of election signage here in Massachusetts. Not so much for Romney and Obama but Scott Brown and Elizabeth Warren signs are everywhere (mostly Brown by at least a 3-1 margin) as well as signs for Congress and the various state legislature seats.

I think at the presidential level, many are afraid of being considered a racist for sporting a Romney sign and similarly, many Obama supporters are embarrassed as being thought of as being less than intelligent for supporting such a loser.

I don't have a Romney sign in my yard because I think he's not conservative enough. However, I plan to vote for him because the alternative is just too awful to contemplate.

I sure am happy I like my work and have a lot of hobbies to keep me occupied. Because I think I would drive myself off a cliff otherwise.

According to my friend who is a political consultant and insider (doesn’t work for Romney), there’s a lack of R and O signs in most areas because both campaigns are selling the signs instead to increase their small donor base. There are very few Romney signs at the victory centers around here, and not just in my democrat county. There’s none in the republican county north of me either.

He also said that the policy is “extremely stupid” and that whoever thought of it on “our side” should in his words “be blacklisted from any campaign again.” I agree with him.

I have seen a few chairs out on lawns near the road. Subtle. But if you understand it... powerful.

Look for chairs.

Wouldn’t it be better to put R/R signs out if that’s the purpose?

Same for me. Sure am getting tired on holding my nose and voting for POTUS. I hope we nominate a true conservative in 2016. (If we last that long)
