Dems hope Biden can blunt Romney momentum post-debate (desperation)
The Hill ^ | 10/5/12 | Niall Stanage and Amie Parnes

Democratic strategists are eyeing the forthcoming debate between Vice President Biden and Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) with a mix of hope and nervousness in the wake of President Obama’s widely panned performance in his initial encounter with Mitt Romney Wednesday night.

On the plus side, some Democrats feel that a strong performance from Biden next Thursday could turn the page on the president’s near-debacle in Denver.

But they also worry that Biden’s legendary capacity to state his views in an inartful fashion could backfire. More prosaically, there is the possibility that the vice-presidential clash will be an insignificant sideshow, which would mean that Obama might have to wait until the second presidential debate on Oct. 16 before righting his ship.

Across the Democratic ranks, the reverberations from the president’s poor showing were clearly still being felt Thursday.
**snip**
Republican consultant Dan Judy said of the Biden-Ryan clash, “it will be entertaining but I don’t think it is likely to change voters’ minds.”

For Judy, unlike the Democratic strategists, that would suit him just fine:

“The president isn’t going to really have a chance to get his footing back until that second debate with Gov. Romney. He has never really found himself in that position in any campaign he has run,” Judy said. “It is going to be fascinating to see if he has the resilience to deal with it.”

Lets not build up expectations sky high for Ryan and super low for Biden, works to the enemedia’s/’rats advantage.

There is the chance that Biden can explain and convince us ALL that another $1 Trillion in taxes is good for the economy...

Ryan can pull a stunt on Slo Joe by asking him exactly how 833,000 jobs were created in Sept. and what kind of jobs.

Biden says a lot of stupid things when he's relaxed, but during a debate, I expect he'll be pretty sharp. He's combative and experienced.

I think the best approach for Ryan is to be calm and stick to the numbers.

The undecided voters will get tired of Biden's yelling and bullying, and recognize how sharp Ryan is.

You know the ship is sinking when you have to rely on Biden for anything.

>> I am sure Biden will pull some sort of stunt on Ryan...

(Fake raspy voice, muffled by talking through a handkerchief):...yeah, hello, Gwen? This is Gwen Ifill? yeah [snif] this is Joe... Joe Biden. Say Gwen... I’m not feeling so good [cough] an’ I don’t wanna give this to anyone, you know, so I’m not gonna be able to come in for tonight’s debate...

It’s to be expected. It’s their standard procedure to whip up some media -generated hysteria to distract or play down from their mistakes, and dirty dealings.

Now that's just got to make dems all warm, fuzzy, and comfy.

Don’t kid yourself. Biden is a very good speaker and CAN beat out Romney. Be cautious. Remember, it’s the media’s game.

Well, maybe, but he is debating Ryan.

Your hate for Romney has finished your last firing brain synapse.

Comatose is one step removed from room temperature.

Whatever they’re smoking over at the WH must be some seriously out of this world stuff. I think there’s more than arugula growing out there in the garden.

Probably not. But the contrast between Ryan and Biden and the idea of an actual, not made up as was the case with Dan Quayle, drooling moron being a "heart beat" away from the Red Phone (if it's expressed in some ads) would be good grist for the late night joke mills.

Liberals take to ridicule and laughter like a vampire takes to sunlight.

It’s absurd to think Biden, even if he’s suddenly coherent and articulate, can do anything to help Obama in the debate. He’s not debating Romney and he isn’t Obama.

This still boils down to a referendum on Obama and there’s little Plugs can say that would change things. I am hoping he manages to either say something stupid or so over the top untrue (ie “Obama is the best friend Israel ever had”) that it leaves an opening for Ryan to demolish him.

“Biden says a lot of stupid things when he’s relaxed, but during a debate, I expect he’ll be pretty sharp. He’s combative and experienced. “

YUppers. He totally smoked Palin by telling a story about his friends at the local cafe ... which had closed 20 years ago.

The worst news for the Romney/Ryan campaign was the unemployment headline. Expect Biden to use the ‘we are turning a corner’ narrative.

... oh, and repeat the lie about Romney wanting tax hikes for the middle class.

I’m not so sure about that given the fact that joe the MOron is next in line.
