Despite disapproval of Romney's faith, many evangelicals say that won't affect their vote

Chattanooga-area evangelical church pastors may believe the Mormon faith is a cult and may not consider Gov. Mitt Romney a Christian, but they said that won't stop them from considering a vote for him in next month's presidential election.

More than eight in 10 voters in a Pew Forum poll this summer said they were comfortable with the Republican nominee's faith or it didn't matter to them. Nineteen percent said they were uncomfortable with his faith.

"We are electing a president, not a pastor," said Tim Shoap, co-pastor of Signal Mountain Bible Church. "I want the best and most effective leader we can get, [one] who will represent the interests of the people and the country in keeping with the original intent of the Constitution. For me, that makes the Mormon issue largely irrelevant."

While members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints consider themselves Christians, several local evangelical pastors do not.

"Mormonism is a cult," said Jeremy Roberts, pastor of Highland Park Baptist Church. "Mormons are polytheistic universalists who deny that Jesus is the eternal son of God."

However, he said he would base his vote on "policy, leadership skills and who I perceive will most likely lead the country in the direction I believe is best."

Not to put too fine a point on it, but Obama’s version of Christianity — black liberation theology — is a Marxist re-misinterpretation of Jesus that not only humanizes him but turns him into an entirely political animal, a concept useful only for telling mobs which enemy de jeur into whom to stick their pitch forks.

Here is what my pastor said on this topic:

“I’ve been asked a lot whether an evangelical Christian should vote for a presidential candidate who is a Mormon. Here is my response:

You’re not voting for a pastor or an elder, or a church, you’re voting for a President. If you vote for
Mitt Romney you vote to support someone who will protect the unborn, support marriage (as defined as one woman married to one man), is committed to family, believes in freedom of religion and a strong defense of your country. You are not being asked to vote for Mormonism. If you vote for a Jewish candidate you’re not voting for Judaism.

It’s significant that the current President has said he is an evangelical. Yet, most evangelical Christians find the moral agenda of the current administration conflicts with their cherished Christian values.

The current administration’s disregard for the rights of religious groups to practice their faith in regard to birth control and abortion is alarming. Many see it as a first step to the government legislating what the church may or may not do.

I think of it this way: if I needed heart surgery and was able to choose between a Christian doctor who had lost a lot of patients or a Mormon cardiologist who was successful, —I would choose the successful cardiologist.

I also hear that there are some who have decided not to vote because they don’t like either candidate. We must understand that we will never agree completely with any candidate (unless we were voting for ourselves! LOL). Yet we make a decision based upon which candidate fills most of the values we hold.

You must understand that to choose not to vote IS a choice and is irresponsible in a country where tens of thousands of brave men and women have died to give us and maintain for us, this privilege.

To use eschatology as a reason not to vote is also irresponsible. Yes, we know that the Lord is coming, but we are to pray for open doors to share the Gospel before Jesus returns. An educated vote may keep the doors open for four more years and keep them open for many years to come. The Scriptures also teach us that we should support the nation of Israel and receive God’s blessing. We must prayerfully consider which of the candidates set before us has made a very clear commitment to stand with Israel as she faces the possibility of another holocaust.

I’d also encourage everyone to go to the Center for Arizona Policy and get information of the candidates and ballot propositions: http://azvoterguide.com/

I encourage everyone to become fully informed and seek the Lord’s guidance and wisdom and vote their conscience.”

I’ve always been confused about the whole Evangelical thing. I always see that word tossed around, but I rarely hear people identify themselves as such.

I don’t care what they deny or don’t deny.

Someone else’s belief system is not my business until they start flying planes into buildings.

I seriously doubt you know what a Christian is. You certainly haven’t shown any signs of being one.

I'm not Evangelical, but I'm voting for a CEO and executive director, not Priest. Who would be a better caretaker of the the government the next four years? Who would hire better executive directors?

Moral factors do factor in, but it's more how you live your life and not what your religious beliefs are (although I don't trust Muslims). Who is more trustworthy, or in this case, less untrustworthy?

Personally, I have no problem with Mormons. I don't agree with their religion, but knew a bunch of them in law school and all of them were good people who took care of their families.

The LORD Jesus Christ who is God said to Chris “Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in Hell.” Matthew 10:28

Praying that God will confuse Obama’s mind in the next two debates. Is Sharia law coming? No Christian will have a right to worship God/Jesus Christ. Read what is happening in various cities in US where Muslims (Obama’s friends) are taking hold.

Exactly how I see it. Romney may be half a loaf on some things but Obama is nothing but crumbs.

I never saw Obama as a muslim. I always felt he was an atheist. His religion like all progressives is his ideology.

IMO the reason progressives side with muslims is that sharia is more compatible with communism. Submission is what they are looking for.
