Communism was already an American dream during the Spanish Civil war when Americans volunteered to fight on the commie side in Spain. Before that, many had the dream to emigrate to the new Workers' Paradise in Russia. The book The Forsaken tells of the horrors of that experience.

Communism was already an American dream during the Spanish Civil war when Americans volunteered to fight on the commie side in Spain.From what I have read, many Americans were slaughtered when they joined the communist cause in the Spanish Civil War. I think the number was close to 2000 who fought on the side of the communists. It takes a pretty solid committment to join another county's war.
