Scientists convicted of manslaughter for failing to warn of earthquake

An Italian court convicted seven scientists and experts of manslaughter on Monday for failing to adequately warn citizens before an earthquake struck L'Aquila in central Italy in 2009, killing more than 300 people.

The court in L'Aquila sentenced the defendants to six years in prison. Each is a member of the country's Grand Commission on High Risks. …

Scientists worldwide had decried the trial as ridiculous, contending that science has no reliable way to predict earthquakes.

Among those convicted were some of Italy's most prominent and internationally respected seismologists and geological experts, including Enzo Boschi, former head of the country's Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology. "I am dejected, desperate," Boschi said after the verdict. "I thought I would have been acquitted. I still don't understand what I was convicted of." …

"From the nation that brought you Gallileo"

Didn't Gallileo get into some kind of trouble too, because his work with outer space conflicted with religious teachings, or something of the like?

With the liberal MSM, sometimes you read a story so outlandish you think there have to be some facts missing.

In this case, I had heard elsewhere that all the scientists worked for a government agency.

I can imagine a scenario where they have been living off the public teat for years by claiming they could predict earthquakes. Perhaps this conviction is for theft by fraud.

The story needs more information. What did these scientists claim they could do? What were they paid to do? And what did they actually do?

They weren’t religious teachings per se. The church officials at that time upheld the view of Aristotle and Ptolemy that all heavenly bodies rotated around the earth (the so-called “geocentric orbit” theory). It may have been that the heliocentric orbit that the telescopes revealed (and that was concurrent with Copernicus’ findings and the theories of Aristarchus) echoed too much of sun worship and Ba’alism, to the church’s view back then.
