FRESNO, California (KFSN) -- Proposition 30 would increase the California sales tax by a quarter of a cent. The money raised would help fund education and public safety.
Business and taxpayer groups opposed to Proposition 30 gathered in Fresno. They say taxes should not be raised in a down economy. But some students and educators at Fresno State say the initiative would give education a much needed $6 billion boost.
"There's nothing in there about higher education but even that's irrelevant," Jon Coupal said. "There's no provision in there that adds new money to the education budget."
Sean Kiernan said, "Section 2, paragraph G explicitly states that this money goes to schools and to point out that some money would go to other sources as if that somehow means that doesn't go to schools now is just abhorrently dishonest."

The government will tax you without asking for your permission every chance it gets. Voting to tax yourself is the acme of folly.
CA I’m sure was depending on Obama re-election to bail them out. Its not going to happen and CA is going to be in a world of hurt by 2013.
Saying it is for education probably really means it is for teachers’ already bloated pensions. The teacher’s union is holding the kids hostage for indulging their greed.
I am here in California, and my daughter is in a junior college. Still I say vote no!

Yep, as a Texan, i now live in Marin County CA. The LIB majority out here is for ALL government, no matter how it’s cloaked.
THE ONLY time i’ve even seen ANY of these old dopers ‘care’ about individual freedom is when THEIR ox is getting gored.

I live on a small island in WA with 5000 population. Approximately half of the population are Californians and the majority of them are retired teachers, cops, firemen and pilots.
In my line of employment I see financial information on these folks and it’s quite typical to see pensions of $70-100k per year from a City, County or State of California. Guess what? There is no state income tax in WA. so they file their taxes from here.
Winter when it’s cold and rainy, they return to the sunny south where they continue to have Prop 13 benefits on their homes. Car tabs....WA has a flat fee of $42 no matter the car. Prop 30 won’t hurt these Californians and they could care less. Lots of Permanent Disability Californians as well.

And that is the real reason for Prop 30, they need it to keep these guys on the gravy train. All the money from this is expected to go into pensions. I’ve looked at the California pension system, you’ve got costs going up 10% per year while investments are only making 3%. They’ll be insolvent in 10-15 years or sooner as all productive people are leaving CA.
