Staten Islanders On Sandy Response: We’ve Been Left FAR Behind; They ask: Where is FEMA?
CBS Local NY ^ | 11/2/12 | CBS Local NY

Staten Island residents are furious. They feel that in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy they’ve been ignored and left to fend for themselves.

CBS 2′s Jessica Schneider toured the borough on Thursday night and saw one home on Cedar Grove Avenue that looks like it was torn to shreds by a tornado.

However, it was surging ocean waters that tore the house apart, and filled others with more than 10 feet of water.

It’s that type of apparent neglect that has left residents saying they haven’t received the attention or help they so desperately need.

“Red Cross is here with hot chocolate and cookies. We need blankets, we need pillows, we need clothing. We can get hot chocolate and cookies, we need help!” resident Jodi Hannula said.

These were once homes in the Breezy Point section of Rockaway Beach

And these were once homes in the Belle Harbor section of Rockaway Beach

And these were once stores in the Rockaway Park section of Rockaway Beach

But they belonged to New Yorkers, so no one gives a damn...

By day 3 of Katrina 20,000 people had been rescued from flooded neighborhoods

by Day 4-5 of Katrina 40,000 people had been EVACUATED from New Orleans

What is obama-bloomies plan to evacuate cold hungry homeless people from inhabitable areas of Staten Island and Brooklyn? Or do obama hate white people...

In LA, (lower Alabama) I have seen billboards sponsored by the state with the slogan. The first 72 is up to you. 72 hours post disaster don’t anticipate anything, you are on your own

I’ve been through multiple storms and have lived within 20 miles of the Gulf for the last 40 years. I would hate to be in the NE now. Way too many people.

The population density is OK I guess when all is well.

I like my neighborhood.
about 20 souls in a mile of dirt road.

During hurricane Alicia, the Red Cross was charging for sandwiches and coffee. No thanks, they’re off my list.

There was no shortage of smug jackasses mouthing off at FR after Katrina. In fact it was downright popular.

The left wing loons created the lie starting with Bush 41 in Florida and again with Bush 43 in New Orleans. Now they are forced to live with the lie they created.

By day 3 of Katrina...

You do realize that those people were still under water, as was everyone else for miles around? The people of SI are hurting, and I sympathize, but they are not in imminent danger of dying. As soon as their NFIP claims are paid they'll be on their way to recovery.

Let's not rush into Staten Island without knowing the whole story people.

and you realize that Bush's people actually staged 2 evacuations in the first 6 days?

First 20,000 people rescued and taken to stadium, then within 24 hours, those people plus another 20K evacuated from NO to shelters in state and out of state because there were no neighborhoods to go back to

Looking at SI and other locations, a lot of people have no homes or neighborhoods to go back to. Has there even been an assessment yet?

Getting an insurance check isn't going to save the lives of people without food and clean water and heat in the next few critical days, and their ability to leave on their own seems further limited by loss of their cars, lack of gasoline and transportation disruptions

Maybe time to open up some of FEMA’s 645 camps, or at least move people to auxiliary regional military bases with facilties to sustain their lives in safety

I don't see anyone from FEMA briefing this
I see obama is campaigning again

Maybe I am way off, but when I read the original comment, I took it that relief providers had several days to have these things at the ready.

Food, water, blankets and medical supplies should have been ready to be dispensed as soon as the storm subsided.

Where is FEMA?
FEMA is busy figuring out how it can divert emergency funds from the disaster area to the Obama campaign without being too obvious.

Calm down. You are aware that power is back on for most of Staten Island now? This is not The End Of The World As We Know It. This is the way the rest of the world lives, including millions of Americans in Florida and along the Gulf Coast. 95% of Staten Island will be fine in a week. I know people (and am related to some) who have still not recovered from Katrina.

That’s right....bussed off to Houston.

I don’t recall how the weather was directly after Katrina hit - but these poor people in NY and Jersey are heading into a cold snap right away - tonight.

Am I mistaken? I think that Staten Island is the most Republican and conservative area of NYC. They come last.

Correct - Staten Island is most Italian American repubs and they don’t count for squat in the leftist run NYC.

Obama / Bloomie to Staten Island - Let them eat Canolis!

In Staten Island, McCain beat Obama by about 7 points in 2008.

FEMA stood down.

Be patient, though, someone will be along shortly to collect the corpses.
