Kroger to Slash Hourly Workers to Avoid Obamacare Penalties
Flopping Aces ^ | 11/4/2012 | Doug Ross

Operative Faith reveals that Kroger will soon join the ranks of Durden Restaurants and slash the hours of its non-exempt (hourly) workers to avoid millions in Obamacare penalties.

To give you a sense of Kroger’s size and importance, its sales last year were $90 billion and it employs nearly 350,000 people. Most of its jobs are hourly and the vast majority of workers are neither millionaires or billionaires.

Faith is a mid-level manager at Kroger and reports the dire news:

Last week we found out that, beginning in January, any employee who is not full-time at that point, will be limited to 28 hours per week and all new hires will be subject to the same policy.

Currently, part-time employees can work as many hours as needed.

Many Kroger employees, I believe, will be shocked to find out about this new policy.

Yep. Part time workers are better candidates for food stamps for life. What better way to destroy a families ability to be self sufficient and make sure both parents have to work than to pass a law that favors part-time vs. full time work?

Unless they can strike with pay I don’t see too many employees falling on the sword for unions.

This is all to change the concept of full-time to less than 40 hours a week, to be like Europe.

You may be on to something. Get them all to voluntarily cut hours. Then double the minimum wage and tell them they're on the hook for Obamacare anyhow.

This is TOOO funny. At least, at the Krogers closest to me, I would venture to say that 60% of the employees are “minorities” who probably voted for the messiah. ‘Couldn’t happen to a better bunch. There ARE consequences.

“I’m predicting about 15% unemployment in one year”

Not so sure about that, if those currently unemployed are willing to work part time, there should be a ton of those jobs available real soon. NOW I think U6 which takes into consideration under employment that will be >= 20%

Perfect! That is exactly the sort of feedback I'm looking for!

I want honest numbers.

(That was also a line where the hidden column lacked a hard date)

Fixed for next post. Thanks!

Yep.

They will announce a deal to fix the “fiscal cliff”. Obama will be praised for “fixin the economy”.

The deal will prove how unserious they are at actually doing anything about the spendaholism. The markets and economy will crash.

Most Kroger employees are Obama supporters.

Did you take a poll of their three hundred thousand employees?

Nope. Watch for all but 1lane at checkout to be automated. Stocking farmed out to contract companies. Employers will get very creative in finding ways to skirt this law.

If you guys are interested in keeping tabs on layoffs etc. since Maobama's election, perhaps you can coordinate.

MyFavoriteHeadache (Doug) has posted many stories on the subject.

Third option, it will accelerate automation. IIRC Kroger is unionized, F&CW?

Replace the people with self-serve scanners.

I understood that Darden runs more than just Red Lobster. I was using brevity for comedic effect. Their national headquarters are in my backyard (Orlando).

And while I don’t make it a point to wish ill on people, it’s only fitting that they’re one of big groups coming out with announcements like this.

I find nothing wrong with private sector unions in companies that are not monopolies or in the too big to fail category.

The problem is with public unions who are in a monopoly situation and with unions that are in companies that are too big to fail because then they can blackmail the public for almost anything they want.

But private sector unions not in a monopoly and not too big to fail have a vested interest in having the company succeed and not fail. Bankruptcy is the ultimate check on union power here.

So I do not like the bashing of the Kroger unions here.

Kerp in mind that Kroger isn’t just “Kroger”. There are about 25 chains that fall under tbe Kroger umbrella. For my area their supermarkets are King Soopers and City Market. You can scroll through the Kroger family of stores at the bottom of this link: http://www.kroger.com/corporate_brands/Pages/default.aspx
