Video: Feds shut down 100-year-old oyster company, destroy some lives and dreams
Hot air ^

Hey, no bigs. It’s just a 100-year-old company and California’s only surviving cannery, a sustainable, family-owned operation employing 30 people. The Drakes Bay Oyster Company has been in a seven-year fight with the federal government and environmental groups over whether it’s 40-year lease would be renewed this week. The Lunny family, which owns the oyster farm, was among a group of families that sold their ranch lands to the National Parks Service in the 1970s to protect them from developers, with the understanding they would get 40-year-leases renewed in perpetuity. After buying and operating the oyster farm without incident— they were even featured as outstanding environmental stewards by the National Parks Service— the Lunnys learned in 2005 they were accused of bringing environmental damage to an area the NPS and environmentalists were anxious to designate as the nation’s first federally recognized marine wilderness.

This seems unnecessary. Just another attack on human activity and private enterprise.

Muslims believe oysters to be haram, IIRC. Just sayin'.

I would lean toward the supporting the “wrong person” theory.

That’s right....DON’T TRUST THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. The longest standing treaty between the Federal Government and the original Americans took 7 days from the time the Federal government signed with the Seminols, in Florida, was seven (7) day. The Feds came in and broke their word, as they’ve done with every other treaty between the “originals” and Federal Government. The federal government’s word will never be worthy of going into my compost heap, and that’s the manure. Their word means NOTHING.

If the "understanding" was not in writing, they are screwed. I can't believe people are this stupid. I was involved in a similar land sale in Tomales Bay nearby and am very familiar with the bureacracy with unlimited funds at their disposal, and the illegal restrictions they can impose which they then claim reduces the value of the land and the purchase price.

The Pacific Foundation has been very successful in fighting both the state and federal governments when they play the illegal abuse of power thing. I hope this family is getting help from them.

A large check written to Organizing for America would solve this problem in a heartbeat.

Wonder if that Family would show up on any Obama donor lists? Or if they are one of the few repubs still in California?

If the Feds didn’t shut them down, California would have. I bet it was a joint operation.

Oh, and the US EPA wants to make the California Cap and Trade system effective nationwide, thus any business doing business in CA (or is tied to CA businesses) would have to abide by CA’s Cap and Trade system.

Comments on the Marin IJ site indicate that the Obama-voting Marinites are outraged by Salazar’s decision...but they still can’t understand how their own votes led directly to it.

My guess is that they probably would. I can’t recall it off the top of my head but there was a previous post that stated that the family sold the property to the feds in the 1970s to protect it from developers. The “protection from developers” phrase leads me to believe that they were environmental idiots.

Problem is the bureaucrats are still getting their paychecks. When it actually affects them then they’ll realize they’ve killed the golden goose

And at that point they will be the first in line for "FEMA" camps or the first to be eliminated in the spirit of all true Marxist countries.

Right. Just ask Messers Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, Chief Joseph, et al, if you don’t believe it.

I once saw a bumper sticker that said: CUSTER HAD IT COMING!

And after thinking about it for a while, I concluded that the arrogant bastid probably did!

What sort of nincompoop does that?
