NBC sportscaster Bob Costas will appear tonight on Fox News OReilly Factor with host Bill OReilly as the centerpiece of a gun rights controversy that just keeps on giving like the proverbial Christmas present with a down-side.
He's trying to mollify a lot of angry people and it is obviously not working at Northwest Firearms, Shooters Northwest, Seattle Guns or Gun Rights Media. His media colleagues may be okay with his remarks, and buy his shifting explanations, but that merely has sharpened the philosophical disparity between the media and a huge segment of its audience.
This column discussed Mr. OReillys defense and criticism of Costas remarks during a halftime broadcast Sunday evening, and for the past couple of days, Mr. Costas has been doing his best to pick up the pieces. His verbatim use of a diatribe launched over the weekend by Kansas City sports writer Jason Whitlock, combined with his own remarks, has galvanized gun rights activists and firearms organizations.
The Second Amendment Foundation and Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms are reportedly demanding an apology and want people to sign an on-line petition to NBC.
Over the past two days, Mr. Costas and others have shifted their story, insisting that his Sunday remarks were not about guns, but the gun culture that appears to him to be pervasive across the American landscape. The term seems somehow derogatory, as though to suggest that the firearms community is comparable to some sort of bacteria.

I don’t think Bob should lose his job because he’s against the 2nd Amendment. He’s a lefty, he’s a gun grabber, the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. He was foolish to use the murder/suicide as an opportunity to voice his opinion to a national audience but whatchagonnado?
I’m sure there’s millions of people that will forever think of him as a weasel now and that’s punishment enough. It’s funny watching him make the situation worse as he goes about trying to make it better. It’s bugging the hell out of him that people he views as his inferiors have caused him discomfort. At a certain point, the arrogance can’t be hidden.
Costas:
“I am not aying I am FOR gun control, but I AM for gun control. However if you inferred my meaning to be FOR gun control, it is your own fault.”
“Gun Culture”.....and this is why costas can keep trying to massage away what he said but I am not listening. I heard what he said VERY clearly and the analogy that he made. Hey Costas, if you don’t want feedback on your PERSONAL opinion, don’t spout off during an NFL game!
Thanks Bob, part of the Christmas list is done.
Agree. I saw anger, as well.
I wonder if Bob was surprised to realize the heavy maybe over the top volume of non Bronco supporters having been under the impression that the one had earned like 99% of the prez vote.
BINGO!
I also believe that gun control is necessary, two hands with a pistol and shooting sticks for a rifle {shotguns are free hand}.
In a life threatening emergency, the control rules may be bent where required.
Bob needs to just be quiet. The more he follows up on his original comments, the more he just smears the poop.
Last night, O’Reilly brought up the theater massacre and asked Costas if he would rather drop to the floor and hope for the best in a similar situation, or have a gun of his own to defend himself. The little dork said no, he would not want a gun.
I have nothing but contempt for the cowardly little metrosexual.
Wife is partial to the Bersa Thunder 380 w/extended clip or the Ruger LCP with w/extended clip. I’m leaning toward a Beretta Px4 Storm .40 or Ruger SR1911.
Nine MMs are for people who squat to pee.
Learn to handle a .45 ACP.
“I dont think Bob should lose his job because hes against the 2nd Amendment.”
After a hundred million innocent dead in the twentieth century, no liberal is entitled to the slightest consideration, courtesy, or civility. Liberals should be reviled, abominated, spat upon, even beaten, whenever they have the gall to show their faces in the presence of decent people.
Fired? I think it should be impossible for him to get from his car to his office because of the hordes lined up to beat the crap out of him.
The funny thing about Costas on O’Reilly was that Costas was actually saying that young black men shouldn’t be allowed to have guns. Neither he or O’Reilly seemed to understand what Coatas was actually saying. Typical libs.
I’ve lost all respect for Costas. I had a bunch. They would be alive?
The idea that a mentally ill and deranged 6’ 4” 240 lb professional athlete couldn’t kill defenseless 120 lb woman (or 98% of the population for that matter) with his bare hands and needed a gun is just stupid.
Exactly. He’s paid to discuss sports. Not to give his political opinions.
Newsflash: grown men who wear makeup and get plastic surgery so they can discuss other grown men playing ball games on television might not be intelligent/informed enough to offer commentary on anything other than sports!
