Glenn Beck Defends Gay Marriage: Republicans Need To 'Expand Our Own Horizon'
Business Insider ^ | 12/11/2012 | Grace Wyler

Posted on 12/11/2012 9:48:27 AM PST by SeekAndFind

Conservative firebrand Glenn Beck has joined a growing chorus of Republican commentators in defending gay marriage, laying out a strong case for ending government opposition to letting same-sex couples wed.

"Let me take the pro-gay marriage people and the religious people — I believe that there is a connecting dot there that nobody is looking at, and that's the Constitution," Beck said during a recent segment of his online talk show. "The question is not whether gay people should be married or not. The question is why is the government involved in our marriage?"

While Beck's defense of gay marriage may seem surprising, given his far-right political views and audience, it is actually not new. Earlier this year, Beck said that he has the "same opinion on gay marriage as President Barack Obama" and does not see same-sex unions as a "threat to America."

Still, Beck's public renewal of his support for gay marriage comes at a politically significant moment for the GOP, which is working to reshape its message to appeal to a changing electorate. A Gallup survey released last week found that 53 percent of Americans are in favor of legalizing gay marriage, a number that has been steadily growing for the past decade.

Moreover, by couching his support for gay marriage in a libertarian framework, Beck makes the case for the right to look past differences on social issues in order to broaden their coalition to include all limited government conservatives.

"What we need to do, I think, as people who believe in the Constitution, is to start looking for allies who believe in the Constitution and expand our own horizon," Beck said. "We would have the ultimate big tent."

Read the history of Reagan, what his challenges were and exactly how he ended up with the nomination.

The GOP establishment absolutely did not nor did they support Reagan and in fact even today they work diligently to diminish anything he did.

If you want to see some interesting history...read about what happened to Reagan when he said he going after the Federal Reserve.

LOL, look it up yourself.

I merely asked you to explain your statement, not give me permission to read history and biographies.

“”Reagan shouldn’t have ever happened, the RNC sabotaged his efforts for decades before he got the nomination.””

What decades, what sabotaging?

People as expressed by Beck seem to believe all natural and historical people relationships are to be defined by what people care to believe. Using Beck and like person’s mentality I would have no problem defining a tree as nature’s penis of one kind or another. I used to have a warm spot for Beck in my mind but have come to be very leery of his societal verbiage.

That’s the underside of the Libertarian platform: “look ma, no morals.”

1. There should not be a tax code. No IRS, no income taxes. Should be repealed.

2. But since there is, currently, a tax code, faggots should not ever have the status of a married couple (husband and wife), under any circumstances whatsoever.

I wouldn’t support any of that at the Federal level whatsoever...however I think the states can’t do what they want to do.

I think this is a really important piece of the puzzle, without the freedom of the states to try their stupid ideas we will ALWAYS be forced by the federal government to suffer uniformly under their stupid ideas.

Let’s the states try anything they want and when they fail miserably at competing, etc...problem solved they just go away.

You know there was a time when man was truly free in America before all of these absurd laws

That's just a blind reading of history, surfer. Until very recently, homosexuality has always been illegal in America.

If you're going to come up with these theories, then you should force yourself to recognize the actual facts of the situation you face. The Federalists, Jefferson, Madison, Washington, et al, participated in the criminalization and punishment of deviant sexuality.

They saw absolutely no contradiction.

Fighting Disease has ALWAYS been recognized as Defense of the homefront. This is not some bizarre new theory.

Theories?

The entire issue has to do with federal versus state - that’s it.

I could care less if a state made anything legal or illegal, their decisions would drive the ultimate fate of that state.

We would have choices - if your state made a law you don’t agree with you could move. Whenever we want a top down enforcement from the federal government we end us losing.

You are so stuck with your hatred you can’t see straight nor see the simple point that has been made.

The reason you are big government is because you think the federal government should enforce the things YOU WANT them to enforce. I DON’T WANT the federal government enforcing ANYTHING I want. The states can do whatever they want.

That's crazy. The state can no more justly violate natural law than can the federal government.

I've heard that kind of gobbledygook thinking on these pages before. “Let the states decide abortion.” Baloney. They can no more unjustly take a human life than can the fed, the local, the school board, or the town cop.

Get a grip, surfer. You've got some kind of state-itist that ignores the big picture.

Do you think States should be allowed to decide if slavery is OK for their state?

You would have flourished in the 1930’s in Germany.

You just don’t understand the implication of what you are asking for. IT WILL BE TURNED AGAINST YOU.

It’s coming and people like you will absolutely deserve the immense suffering you will receive from the very same people you are empowering and you will have NO place to go.

You are a short-sighted fool who completely ignores historical fact and exactly what is going on in this country. You have been played and you continue to be played.

You probably think the Patriot Act is a great thing, that George W was a great president.

Hey genius what are you going to do when the federal government bans Christmas and anything else to do with the Christian faith?

Where are you going to go?

You going to submit or become a criminal?

Of course, I don’t worship Beck.

I am, however, passionate about the truth. And stunned that so many members of The Stupid Party are active on FR. Falling for left-wing media smears ... pathetic.

Beck is not perfect. But he sure isn’t in favor of redefining marriage.

Elsie — I’ve appreciated your posts and comments about Mormonism.

I know Beck is a Mormon, and that is a big strike against him. That he has fallen for that hoax tells me that he lacks discernment.

That said, nothing I have heard from Beck tells me that he is in favor of redefining marriage. This article is simply a smear piece. Divide and conquer. And members of The Stupid Party have once again fallen for that tactic of destruction, as they did with all the decent Republican candidates in this last election cycle ...
