The Democratic chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee says he plans to hold a hearing in January to consider changing federal drug laws to allow people to possess up to one ounce of marijuana.

On Thursday, Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) released a letter that he sent earlier this month to Gil Kerlikowske, the director of the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), asking the nation’s drug czar how the administration intends to proceed now that two states have legalized marijuana use. …

It was n a national scale when the outlawed it. Why should it not be a national repeal?

Why not 16 ozs? Or 32 oz?

They will slowly scale it up every year until we get there and beyond. And lower the age to 12. But all those kids will have already raided their stoned parents' stash.

It's not fun teaching stoned kids with their bloodshot eyes and shit-eating grins. At least they aren't usually violent. Hey, maybe it would be a GOOD thing! Just keep the "low ambition" kiddies stoned.

I know what you mean. Stoned and easier to contol and program. The Russkis used vodka but a lot of people living in this country don’t like vodka.

I’ve received numerous posts over the last few days from people advocating criminal behavior, cowardice and insanity. Let’s see. That sounds familiar. Oh, yeah, Connecticut. Gosh, he felt like he could choose what laws he had to obey. Shooting six year olds? There’s a coward for you. Insane? Don’t need to say anything here. So, come on! Let’s hear it from those who advocate for criminal behavior, cowardice and insanity! People who take illegal drugs to escape reality are cowards, and no culture values cowards. Come on! Assuage your guilty conscience now!

In the future ‘drug evasion’ becomes a crime.

Is that my fair share? Taken from the richest 1% I hope.

Actually, I’d rather have my share from a DEA agent. They always have the best dope.

Good point.

So, to clarify the case here... we have an old national law that a ‘Rat is suggesting be tweaked - ie, keep it national, but modify it slightly.

So, seems to me the right thing to do is to strike the law in its entirety, and let states pick up the pieces.

Sure looks like cleaning up from a national govt to a federal one, with years and years of krap, is going to be messy like this...

I’ve got a better idea: limit the Federal role in dealing with psychoactive substances (or any other material goods for that matter) to the plain meaning of the Commerce Clause, not its expansion in Wickard. Let the Feds ban the importation of whatever and forbid transport across state lines for the purpose of selling if they want, but let the states decide what they want to allow or criminalize within their borders.

This is a Drug War thread. Bringing up the Constitution will get you lynched!

Odd, I thought I was posting on Free Republic, which, according to its statement of purpose, "advocates a return to constitutionally limited government, reserving all government powers not expressly delegated by the constitution to the United States to the States respectively, or the people, emphasizing sovereign state governments, local government, self-government and self-rule, while restricting government powers to only those enumerated in the constitution and maximizing individual rights and liberty as originally envisioned and established by our Founding Fathers and secured and defended by the blood of patriots and statesmen for over two hundred years."

Are there really virtual lynch-mobs hanging about here who are opposed to that purpose? (^_^)

My take is they are letting off the petty users but still prosecuting the sellers. They haven’t legalized pot. They have allowed an exception for possession of small amounts.

So do you think the Founding Fathers would be proud and approving of this war on drugs?

No, all we need is 50 million teenagers holding up traffic all
day trying to roll doobs while stoned at the intersection.
