Obama Bypasses Congress to Mandate Black Boxes for All Cars -- Beginning in '14

Bypassing Congress, the Obama administration has issued a proposed administrative rule, which if adopted, would mandate the installation of "black boxes" in all automobiles and light trucks beginning in 2014.

The U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) proposed the regulation on Dec. 7, which it said “would capture valuable safety-related data in the seconds before and during a motor vehicle crash.”

The proposed standard would require automakers to install event data recorders (EDRs) – so-called “black box devices” -- to collect specific safety related data in all light passenger vehicles beginning Sept. 1, 2014.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said approximately 96 percent of model year 2013 passenger cars and light-duty vehicles are already equipped with black-box capability...

Black box

So, what happens if you unplug it, let a spark plug wire snap onto the terminals for a couple seconds, and then plug it back it again?

Inquisitive minds are dying to find out.

If my 1984 Mercedes were still running (conked out about 2 weeks ago) I don’t think the technology was there to spy on me this way. Anyone want a project car? LOL

All computerized cars already have this feature already OBD On Board Diagnostics. You can't short circuit it or just take it out and throw it away because its the brains for the ignition, starter, gages and self diagnostics of your entire vehicle.

You can hook them to a computer and play with them however because we have done that plenty with the fuel mapping on some newer Camaro's.

The have GPS too so don't think they don't.

So does the cell phone in your pocket though. Even the cheap ones.

If its a computer, you can crack it.

Maybe like ET you can make it call home and tell them to F off !

3/8 drill bit through the black box housing and little acid in the hole. If confronted, claim vandalism.

that is why I will buy a pre 1970 VW and just keep it running

You had better put in a gps and tracking device to protect it in case it's stolen! Just kidding, although my next-door neighbor's vintage VW bug was stolen right from his driveway in the middle of night. The thieves rolled and pushed it away down the street, and presumably started it elsewhere. He's a light sleeper. He never saw it again. I have a 1966 vintage car, and worry about it being stolen. So it's never left anywhere that I can't watch it. Simple to work on, will never die, no computers or monitoring devices. Screw Obama and his overreach for power.

A real black box don’t even record those. It only records aircraft parameters, speed, heading, altitude, etc. The voice recorder pieces everything together.

Well—there’s that possibility of course.....

Whatever—it is what it is. Let ‘em come and get me. I don’t even care anymore.

Could be a bit of a problem since this is the same computer that controls the engine and transmission, LOL.

If the current resident of the White House can force this on us with a mere “administrative rule”, how long before they will be required as after market devices to be installed in all vehicles regardless of age???

The President cannot “bypass Congress”, the Congress gave up regulatory power to the executive long long ago

After the routine Christmas misery ends and I start getting more daylight, I plan to get back on the raggedy Willys project. My killers are being allowed to work on it while placating the spouse who wants to go to all kinds of Christma stuff and the lack of light. The building it is has no power. I can’t complain since I am allowed to keep it there at no charge.

I have been working on persuading the owner (FIL) to reconnect power and that I would pay for it. It might happen one day.

It has taken a long time but I got the clearance to dispose of a large bay full of old insulation and the prop manager will pick up the bill.

I have a pain of an ignition problem. The wiring harness itself is in poor condition and I have started running some new wire to bypass it just to get a start. A start and run would thrill me to no end.

It spins over great and seems to have good compression although I haven’t put a gauge on it.

For a laugh:

Wondered about that myself. If you go to the website, download the .pdf file (which is not indexed, bastards) and look at it, the agency says EDRs should cost about $20/each.

Like hell!!

FWIW, the agency also claims in that document that the EDR will not record any personal info, except for the VIN of the vehicle. Yeah, right!

Nice project, lots of work to do! You absolutely need electricity to get stuff done. I have a 1970 car that was like that, spent a lot of time drilling out spotwelds, replacing metal, created a new wiring harness by wrapping new wires, etc.. Have fun! Could never think of working on a new car what with electronics and such. Vintage is better.
