Cities Banning Trucks and New Truck Stops
Truckers Report ^ | 12/21/12 | Samuel Barradas

Posted on 12/21/2012 6:53:42 PM PST by Domandred

Despite pumping life into every town and city that they haul freight to, truckers are still looked upon as a nuisance by most areas. They think of big trucks as rolling death-machines that bring pollution, noise, and crime to their towns, not realizing that what they really bring is absolutely everything the town needs to survive. Well, yet another city is taking steps to ban these “nuisances” from their streets entirely.

The mayor of Columbiana, Alabama has called for a ban on semi-trucks driving in their downtown area. He says that trucks are the main cause of traffic jams in his city and that truckers often drive over curbs. He was quoted as saying “I really feel like we are doing the city a disservice by allowing these large trucks” to drive in the area.

It seems that it’s not just one man’s misguided quest to turn truckers into a scapegoat, the city council has cast their lot in with the mayor as well. “I think it’s unanimous that everyone agrees if we can keep [truckers] out of the downtown area, we should do it,” the mayor said.

Towns across the country trying to keep trucks of their main streets cause annoying, time wasting, and sometimes dangerous detours, but even more worrying is that towns are now trying to keep truck stops from opening their doors anywhere in the town limits.

I'm not long haul driving anymore (got a local gig) but still get trucker news in my email. Saw this earlier today and thought I'd post it.

I know the stats. Professional truckers, with their truck, are considered at fault about 0.0025% of the time, about 1 out of 400 accidents.

Still, it can be a bit intimidating, if I’m driving in the middle lane and I’ve got two semis on either side driving at the same speed I am, and I can’t go faster. :)

Maybe truckers should boycott some towns or cities.

Probably only take 2-3 days for the population centers to come begging for supplies.

OK, then the city can compensate the truck drivers and the businesses that have to have two vehicles haul instead of one.

Okay, how is the mayor going to have food delivered to the grocery stores?

Columbiana, Alabama. At the 2010 census the population was 4,197. Who would have thought they were plagued by traffic jams.

I guess they all hit the road at the same time.

I don’t know about Columbiana, but where I live even the Coca Cola trucks are semi’s. The beer trucks are too, now maybe Columbiana doesn’t need Coca Cola, but surely they drink beer.

I've never been to Columbiana, Alabama but I can imagine that some cities might reasonably want to restrict long rigs in parts of the city, without any overall prejudice against trucks, trucking, or their drivers. It just depends how the city is laid out: width of streets, types of businesses, traffic patterns, pedestrians, etc. If large trucks do not need to make deliveries in a certain part of the downtown, why do they need to be there?

But no denying there are idiot liberals in some places who hate trucks and can not comprehend the consequences if trucks were banned throughout the whole county or country.

No. I feel like a soon-to-be-goner, if one decides right there to move into my lane. :)

1. Trucks can drive in lane 1 where you drive?
2. If you’re in lane 2 and not passing the people in lane 3, why are you in lane 2?
3. If you can’t run with the big dogs, stay on the porch.

I lived in Columbiana Ala. as a youngin'.

Had to check our gunbelts at the door to the (private) kindergarten.

Heard they have an illegal immigrant problem now. It's difficult to believe that they could possibly have an issue with semi's.

If the mayor told me they had a semi issue, I'd tell him "get out'a town".

He should move to Chicago.

Where I live, we don’t have specific trucking lanes.

2. Perhaps it’s because the vehicle in front of me is not allowing me the speed to pass.

3. I drive a small car.

Don’t think they’ve made it out here yet. We have two distribution centers near here but I haven’t seen that type of truck.

Turbo-Diesels rule, even if it is in a car.

“Cities Banning Trucks and New Truck Stops”

Nothing to be worried about here.

Truckers and trucking companies should just withdraw from delivering to those cities.

Problem solved.
