Port Authority cop accused of owning 'Newtown'-style assault rifle
NY Post ^

This gun lover carries a badge.

Port Authority cop Jeffrey Haner was busted on possession of two illegal assault weapons, including the same type of Bushmaster rifle used in the Newtown massacre, authorities said.

Ramsey, NJ, police said they took a total of 10 weapons from Haner after his wife asked for a temporary restraining order.

The 41-year-old cop, who works at the George Washington Bridge and made $175,000 last year, also had eight legal guns, including two handguns, Ramsey police said.

But Haner’s .223-caliber Bushmaster and Chinese-made Norinco rifle were fitted with accessories including flash suppressors that made them illegal assault weapons under New Jersey law, police said.

He was charged on Dec. 21 with two counts of possessing an assault weapon without a permit, police said. The maximum penalty for each charge is five years in prison.

The coroner and the police chief said he used the bushmaster to kill everyone...One shot was fired from the handgun. Also..three to eleven shots per person...that was NOT from a handgun...the first responders knew this was a high powered rifle being fired...you know it when you hear it. It was NOT a handgun...again...think about it...three to eleven shots per person. Not a handgun. Plus the coroner...and the chief of police chief said he killed everyone with the bushmaster..Not handguns. But you knew that when you heard how many shots were fired in to each body. Research the coroner’s news conference. Or the first responders. Or the police chief.

They also said there was a second shooter running through the woods. They said they caught him.

... rifles were fitted with accessories including flash suppressors that made them illegal assault weapons under New Jersey law, police said.

That is completely hideous. Existing federal laws are bad enough, but NJ is completely wacked. Under federal law you can build an AR with a 14" barrel with a flash suppressor pinned and welded to the barrel, increasing the barrel length to 16". This technique takes what the ATF would consider a short barrel rifle (SBR) to a length that is no longer considered an SBR.

For the life of me I can't see any logic for an SBR being a particular length. In general SBRs increase a person's maneuverability in tight spaces, like getting in and out of vehicles, but the trade off is less accuracy. It is legal to own an SBR, but it has to be registered with the government and $200 tax stamp has to be purchased. As for the flash suppressor law in NJ, that makes little sense. That does little, if anything, to increase accuracy. Stupid me, but I equate accuracy to lethality. A compensator may help accuracy on multiple shots if a shooter is too much a wus to control an iddy-biddy 5.56 mm. If anything a compensator will piss off others at the range because the increased volume (bang). Otherwise flash suppressors and compensators are cosmetic.

Before the last election and the CT shooting I was really hoping that some gun laws would be repealed (state and federal). I would really like to shoot with a silencer; not because it looks cool, but because of safety reasons ... not losing my hearing. While it is legal to own a silencer, you also have to pay tribute to the federal government, and in PA you cannot hunt with a silencer. Nothing like the ring in your ears after you just shot a deer. No chance that those laws will change anytime soon.

WTF is wrong with this country?

When a cop makes: "cop, who works at the George Washington Bridge and made $175,000 last year" THAT is what is wrong with this country. How many makers had to toil to support this taker?

I just googled ..what weapon was used in Newtown. It came right up. It was the Bushmaster. Anyone who knows anything about guns knows this was no handgun. This was a high powered rifle. And the coroner said it. The police chief said it. The first responders said it. No one thinks this was done with a handgun.

I would too,

I have an AR-15.

It sounds exactly like a semi-automatic rifle that fires a small caliber projectile.

See my above post. Research it. It is easy. Plus, again, common sense tells anyone who knows anything about guns..this was not done with a handgun. You do not believe the coroner, the police chief or the first responders? Why not? I get it now. You are not arguing with me. You are arguing with the officials who were there for your own reasons. Boy, am I slow. You know well this was not done with a handgun.

5 years in jail for an AR-15 or a SKS, a year or so for mags, $175K for a tollbooth cop, .... This entire article makes no sense when read in Oklahoma.

God Bless Flyover Country!

There is no doubt.

Chief Medical Examiner = elected office.

No doubt? Like Hell. I know of cases where MEs have lied in the past, due to political pressure.

2. Any firearm manufactured under any designation, which is substantially identical to any of the firearms listed in paragraph 1 above. As used in this definition, the term “substantial” means pertaining to the substance, matter, material or essence of a thing and the term “identical” means exactly the same. Hence, a firearm is substantially identical to another only if it is identical in all material, essential respects. A firearm is not substantially identical to a listed assault firearm unless it is identical except for differences that do not alter the essential nature of the firearm. The following are examples of manufacturer changes that do not alter the essential nature of the firearm: the name or designation of the firearm; the color of the firearm; the material used to make the barrel or stock of the firearm; the material used to make a pistol grip; and a modification of a pistol grip. This is not an exclusive list. A semi-automatic firearm should be considered to be “substantially identical,” that is, identical in all material respects, to a named assault weapon if it meets the below listed criteria:

i. A semi-automatic rifle that has the ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least
two of the following:
(1) A folding or telescoping stock;
(2) A pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon;
(3) A bayonet mount;
(4) A flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash
suppressor; and
(5) A grenade launcher;

I’m guessing he did not have a grenade launcher. That means he’s in deep trouble because (1) his (presumably soon to be ex-) wife was mad and wanted to get back at him, and (2) his rifle had a folding stock, bayonet mount, or pistol grip (none of which are relevant to lethality). Wrecking his life over whatever made his wife throw her fit is overkill (hint to guys, even Laz: no matter how cute she may be, STAY AWAY!). Wrecking his life because he violated a stupid law that he would use to wreck any other guy’s life strikes me as karma.

A "Newtown-style assault rifle" is apparently not very effective, since the last known user is now taking a permanent dirt nap.

These newsreaders annoy me beyond my ability to describe.

That was some of the WORST, sloppiest reporting I’ve ever seen/read, and still hasn’t finalized all the “facts”. There are still reports of 3 shooters out there, and vids on YT. The corrupt LSM got the criminal White Hut/Crib’s memo to play-it-up and take advantage of the massacre, for their AWB agenda. They threw everything at the wall, and a lot stuck.

IMO, the WH and LSM were absolutely ecstatic that it happened. Their ‘agenda’ was advanced beyond their wildest wish and belief. Sad to say that, but I believe it’s true.

Not in Connecticut.The Police Chief is appointed by the Local Mayor and the Chief Medical Examiner is appointed by the Governor of the State Of Connecticut.

They are Not elected officials.
