New York City to Restrict Prescription Painkillers in Public Hospitals’ Emergency Rooms
New York Slimes ^ | January 10, 2013 | ANEMONA HARTOCOLLIS

Some of the most common and most powerful prescription painkillers on the market will be restricted sharply in the emergency rooms at New York City’s 11 public hospitals, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg said Thursday in an effort to crack down on what he called a citywide and national epidemic of prescription drug abuse.

I actually got gritched at by one of the docs in the trauma recovery unit for not mashing that opiate button enough.

Sorry, thanks, no... I like to be awake unless it's time to sleep.

When they came in later and told me they were putting in a chest tube... I mashed that button until it stopped delivering. Sucks to be awake for that. Never did scream, though.

all well and good except him and his rich richy elites will get the top of the line drugs from private clinics and hospitals...

the real drug problem is our richy rich people live perverted drugged adled lives and they're EXAMPLES to our children....

I think he is certifiably insane myself...and I mean it. I think the man went ‘round the bend a long time ago.

So what year did Bloomberg graduate from medical school? Oh, he didn’t.

You also know vital signs don’t lie. Patients do.

Are we related?

I don’t think anyone should be left in unbearable pain, but I would rather endure the pain than not know what I am doing...or seeing. And I actually recover faster and better.

After my experience on the mountain, I don't think there's any such thing as 'unbearable' pain. God was merciful, and I blacked out off and on. I did bear the pain that was there, unless I passed out.

That's good enough.

I take it you’ve never had the pleasure of passing kidney stones? The pain is so bad you arel iterally screaming out of your mind- but feelign every last minute of the 8 or so hours of cosntant pain too much to bear- Sure- you get through it somehow- however- it’s a pain noone shoudl have to bear if they don’t have to- I only wished I could pass out- And beleive me, with Crohn’s disease as well, I’ve had pain where I did pass out, and that was child’s play compared to kidney stone pain

I lost a kidney in the accident. Blunt trauma crushing to a kidney bad enough to also take out the spleen is also somewhat painful. I spent 2 hours on the mountain, in the blizzard with that before they found me and got me to the big house. 3 hours more to the hospital.

Pain is weakness leaving the body.

Here is a PDF. Use search for “Pain”.
http://www.usafa.edu/10abw/10mdg/cc/support/patient_BillofRights.pdf

It has been medical facility rules for years to listen to the patient. During my nursing med rounds, I had to give pain meds within ten minutes of the request. Of course it had to be within the ordered times.

From PDF:
Pain Assessment and Management: Patients have the right to pain management. The patient has the right to receive appropriate pain assessment and pain management and to know that all reports of pain will be taken seriously and responded to by our healthcare professionals in a quick and caring manner.

Remember Bloomy couldn't do without air conditioning in his SUV? (from the NY Post) Mayor Bloomberg wants to maintain his politically correct credentials on global warming — but hates to get into a hot car when he leaves an air conditioned building. The solution his aides came up with could easily have doubled as a stunt on David Letterman’s show. In full view of bemused tourists and other passers-by, workers yesterday performed what looked like a comedy routine: They hoisted a standard room air conditioner to a side window of one of the mayor’s SUVs parked in the City Hall lot to see if it would fit. http://www.nypost.com/p/news/local/hizzoner_cold_feat_lYxDIMuat7x4PL7nUbdBEM

Odd that you should mention them. I had been having back pain for about 2 weeks. Went to the dr today and she said she thought I had them. She got me in to have a CT scan and some X-rays after I left her office. This just does not feel like the last time but I guess they are different. Will have to wait on results.

Last winter while doctoring for a herniated disc, I went to the ER on a Saturday nite in such horrible pain, I almost passed out. I was given IV for pain & also a Fentanyl patch & sent home.

Had they not been able to give me the Fentanyl patch, I would probably had been admitted for the pain. That just drives up insurance costs.

It is ridiculous to make a broad, across the board ruling like this, as it will hurt the people who truly do need the pain med.

I am not one to like taking those strong pain meds either, but there are circumstances where it is medically necessary!

I think of myself as being a good (but often snarky) Christian lady, but more than jst a few bad words burned through my brain when I read this.

Chronic pain has been my most unworthy opponent for more than 25 of my 47 years. I’ve had surgeries and taken ibuprofen until it chewed its way out and have plenty of experience at “managing” it. There’s pain and there’s breakthrough pain, which is a tough thing to wrestle down if it’s allowed to grow that fierce.

I secrectly pray Bloomberg gets a tooth abcess, needs urgent treatment to drain it and then a root canal. I’d be eternally grateful if his dentist would forget t give him novacane and T3’s afterward.

Bastard.
