Congresswoman did not swear oath on a Bible

Kyrsten Sinema was sworn into Congress Monday, but with a twist: She didn’t swear on a Bible.

The newly elected representative for Arizona’s 9th district swore her oath of office on a copy of the Constitution instead. Sinema refuses to confirm she is an atheist, as many believe, saying merely that she is “not a member of a faith community” and that all Americans deserve both “freedom of religion and freedom from religion.”

There are people in this world who start with horrible and very poor conditions, who become valuable and productive citizens.
There are also people in this world who start with horrible and very poor conditions who use that to continue to make the mistakes the adults in their lives made rather than better themselves.
Krystie seems to have picked the later - you are correct she is really messed up.

Is the “rule” that you must swear on a Bible? If so it’s a stupid rule, because an oath thereupon to those for whom it is just another book would be meaningless. The point of an oath is that there be consequences for the person taking it, if only to their own conscience.

Why do we still have oaths, anyway? Whether it’s a good thing or not they’re as anachronistic as calling lawyers “esquire.” We break contracts, even, willy-nilly. Oaths of office are downright feudal. Unless we begin again lopping off the heads of oathbreakers like in Game of Thrones, I suggest we drop the charade.

Then again, rituals can be meaningful even should no one understand their significance. Then again again, empty rituals which everyone knows to he empty mock ritualism. It’s not that the ceremonies still Kean something without fitting into the contemporary culture. We know what they’re suppose to mean and know also that they don’t mean that anymore.

Also known for her past connections with the Communist Party and openly called herself a “socialist”, among other things - and they elected her anyway. This stuff was pointed out in ads ran in the district.

There’s nothing wrong with freedom from religion, depending upon how you mean it. If it’s no official state church, fine. No special status for religious institutions, okay. No religious imagery displayed officially by public authorities, probably not. No public funds going to religious institutions, definitely not. No nonpublic religiousness assaulting your ears and eyes, absolutely not.

God will know her heart. I will know by her actions. More A-holes have sworn on a stack of Bibles, and then lied cheated and stole. I could not care less how she is sworn. I care how she acts.

An OATH has always been a call on God to witness the truth. It isnt really an OATH if God is not involved.

If no God or No Bible is the standard today, them it is not an OATH!

I agree with her position on this.

The way most congresscritters act once they're in office, they might as well swear their oaths on Grimm's Fairy Tales (which in a lot of ways bears a striking resemblance to the Bible).

what good would it do to swear against it?

Putting the hand on a Bible is actually symbolic.
The oath itself is where you make your promise.
The oath ends with “So help me God.”This makes everything before it a promise to God.
Does anyone know if she refused to say So help me God? If she did not say it, she did not take an oath.

The Constitution is based on the truths of the Bible.

I wonder if she knows that?

I read that Obama is going to use the same routine this time as last time. He will have public swearing using two (not one)bible to impress the stooges with his faith in Lincoln. The real swearing ceremony will be the private chambers of Roberts like last time. If I recall some of the gossip, last time there was a copy of the Koran in the room. This guy and Roberts are not doing what our Founders or many, many USA citizens today look for as a legitimate swearing in procedure. Of course 50% of the people could care less including congresspersons.

Actually, if she’s willing to swear on the Constitution, that works for me. If she holds no religious beliefs, at least the idea that she’s faithful to the ideas the Founding Fathers had for this country is good.

Congress has a Constitution problem — many don’t understand document

MOST Americans do NOT know HISTORY...
